    Flight following in Canada

I'm not sure if the radio license is still required. It was 19 years ago when I got my PPL, but I seem to recall it changing some time after that. In any case, it's something no one would ever check. Also, it wouldn't make sense -- you're also on the radio when you're just overflying Canada...

    Flight following in Canada

I'll have to double-check, but I think the legends are also available free in FltPlan Go (through the documents section, the same place you can download CFS sections). In general, I prefer the Canadian VNC and VTA charts (maybe just because I'm used to them), but there are two areas where the...

    Flight following in Canada

There has recently been a small change in that. The flight service specialist mostly cannot give instructions, but there was a circular a couple of years ago saying that the can say what runway to use (e.g. if they say runway 09 is in use, you can no longer declare that you're using 27 unless...

    Flight following in Canada

One more thing I don't remember seeing in the thread: in Canada, we have a standard enroute advisory frequency, 126.7 MHz, that everyone uses if they're not talking to ATC or on another special frequency. If you're flying in the US near the Canadian border, it might be fun to tune it on your...

    Flight following in Canada

I'll just added the fee is waived if you had originally diverted to one of those airports for weather or another safety issue. I diverted to CYOW once in bad weather, and when I called NavCanada and told them, they canceled the invoice right away, no questions asked.

    Flight following in Canada

If you're just flying through Canadian airspace without landing in Canada, you don't need to call CANPASS or anything similar, and I don't think you'll get a bill from NavCanada. You just need to be on a flight plan (VFR or IFR) and talking to some kind of ATC (American or Canadian) when you...

    <rant> Weather</rant> Update <rant Adulting /rant>

Up here in Ottawa, ON we get about that many days that it's possible to go more than an hour without air conditioning, and 365 days/year without water rationing. Chaqu'un à son gout.

    <rant> Weather</rant> Update <rant Adulting /rant>

Weather's what we fly in. Love it or hate it, we can't leave it. :)

    Coldest temp to fly in

Years ago, I flew my Piper PA-28 in -30c on the ground and -35c aloft. The heater kept up fine until the sun went behind a cloud. :) (The plane was parked outside, but the Tanis heater still kept the engine compartment warm to the touch under the insulated cover, so there was no problem starting.)

Book: "The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh"

True, but most people leave a mixed legacy of good and harm. For example, the person who did the most to win the vote for women in Canada used her first elected position to push for eugenics, including forced sterilization. People are messy, and every idol has feet of clay; best not build...

Book: "The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh"

And a talented aviator. We shouldn't try to make heroes out of human beings, because we'll always be disappointed.

Book: "The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh"

I borrowed this from the library and read it. It's an interesting take on a brilliant but flawed man, who was clever about aviation,* but once the fame went to his head, thought that meant he was equally clever about everything else, including police investigations, biology/medicine, racial...

    Nobody's talking about Meatloaf?

I like Meatloaf, but — like most people — know only his Bat out of Hell album (which I played constantly as a teenager, until I wore out the LP) and his show-stopping cameo in Rocky Horror Picture Show. That said, one brilliant rock album is more than 99.9999%+ of the population will ever...

Is it 5G or is it Memorex?

The 5g rollout hasn't been an issue for Canadian aviation, because the mobile carriers and aviation orgs/regulators got together at the start and made sure there wouldn't be any towers near critical approaches. End of story. Once again, we proved ourselves the world's most-boring country...

19 Year Old Woman Begins Attempt Of Solo Around The World Flight

She packed more experience into a few months than most of us non-professional (and many professional) pilots will get in a lifetime's flying.

19 Year Old Woman Begins Attempt Of Solo Around The World Flight

Heck of a challenge flying 28,000 nm around the world — mostly in the northern hemisphere's winter — when you're restricted to day VFR.

    Garmin Pilot

I agree. I have Garmin in my plane, but I'm glad Avidyne exists to put competitive pressure on them.

    Boeing under investigation... again....

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, what we have now is the worst possible approach — except for all the others that have been tried. Nobody claims that the current aid system is ideal; it's just that everything else ends up much worse, especially the big-ego, vanity approaches. I (and many...

Question, can I travel from AK thru Canada with Basic Med?

As others have posted, no. Canada has something similar, called a Class 4 medical (for the Recreational Pilot Permit) that the U.S. doesn't recognise yet, either. The FAA and TC need to have a good talk. :) The real problem is that ICAO doesn't yet have a standardised level of medical below...

I just made the classic British mistake.

Speaking of classic British mistakes, I'm surprised that no one went here.
