    Student Pilot Fuel Exhaustion

I remember one place that had ‘fuel, instrument, & position’ checks every 15 minutes. It may not be that any action was required, the idea was to create the thought pattern. I may just use a similar phraseology now, even if just for the fun of it. Yes, I know of at least two accidents(Piper)...

    4 July 2023 - Grumman AA5 Tiger HSV / HUA - Huntsville AL (successfull engine-out landing)

Seems a little low from what I see. If not local & familiar, just don’t see one looking at iPads & such for nearby grass fields, more of an ‘eyes-out’ scenario. Maybe he was higher when problem became known. Yes, give me a few knots fast over stalling any day.

How short is too short of a flight?

Let’s mix in some long then the short is no biggie. A week or so ago I flew to Michigan for an overnight, 2 hours each way. Yesterday I cranked up to go to the fuel pump($4.99), I didn’t even fly. I took my time getting back, included a mild run up of sorts. Am I worried about this shorter...

Waiting on DER approval, can I fly

I had a similar event a few years ago, the annual wasn’t signed complete until the DER was satisfied, then signed off on the repair. Yes, could be obvious or maybe not a serious safety of flight issue. I’d be calling the DER every 2 days to light a fire. Tell him Oshkosh is coming up.

    Turn, Climb or 360?

I would lean towards a right or left turn. On a busier frequency, start getting the allowance earlier, even if you hardly use it. At times there are known reasons why they want you to advise, Class C below, whatever. If known, that could go into the mix. Just one buildup, not really a...

KTCC (Tucumcari) to KABQ (Albuquerque) Routing Help

If you’re starting from SD you could easily drift towards S WY then take I-80 into the Salt Lake area. I came back that way not to long ago. I didn’t look going from Salt Lake to S CA. What’s the load? Solo? Or heavier? Of course, weather on the days of is a biggie.

    Sub lost contact over Titanic

I think this was over days ago, for them. Just like with MH-370, nothing wrong with having hope for a better outcome, especially with families. Even if they found the sub, the harder part is attaching then getting it up. They haven’t even found it yet, publicly. Seems there are other hazards...

Getting low and slow on short short final

Power plus attitude equals performance. I guess that could be considered to simplistic? Of course ‘ballpark’ known power settings are good, there will always be variations, weight, atmospheric conditions etc.. Look at comparisons of a 25 kt headwind to zero headwind on final, even with the...

    Sub lost contact over Titanic

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rescue_of_Roger_Mallinson_and_Roger_Chapman Here is a link to the deepest, successful sub rescue, 1575 feet deep, 1973. We may be better than 1973, but 11,000 feet worth?? I hope the best for them, odds are very low. FWIW, I have a close relative on site...

Chicago to Alaska via Piper Arrow

Have a great trip, lots of daylight to work with. My trip up was back in 92, Cherokee 140, 2 of us. I don’t remember any problems with fuel/leg distances. Once further North in Canada I was mostly near the Al-Can Hwy. The main lodging was a tent, maybe a hotel room every few days. A few...

Orleans County NY Experimental, 5/29, 2 dead

Wreckage 1500’ apart? For some reason I think it did come apart in flight. Then comes the question of build quality or over stress of some sort. The Doc was in some legal trouble, but it said he was a passenger. The builder was the pilot. Here is a file picture of aircraft type, not the...

    Oil change intervals

I often change my oil before annual, when the interval comes up. It’s also something I can easily do, yes the slight $$ savings factors in. I save my most recent filter, they like to cut one at annual. So unless there’s a reason, they usually don’t touch the oil or filter on the plane...

Flying from Chicago to Houghton in da UP on Friday

Almost two of my favorite airports. I’m base at BUU, I like OGM better than CMX, but more out of the way though. The reason, one can let their hair down at a non-TSA field. A few other good stops are Monroe, WI, slightly cheaper than BUU. Further North Clintonville, WI(nw of GRB) is a nice...

    Tell Me How To Move

800 sf doesn’t sound like all that much. The first thing to do is pare down, sell or give away stuff not needed. I’ve seen a relative in recent years move a whole 5 bedroom house full of stuff 5 states away, then move it all back 2.5 years later. This was part of divorce induced craziness...

    Spreading Ashes

Maybe if we change the process to ‘depositing ashes’ verses ‘spreading’ the idea of using a plane will fade??

    SFO this time

I don’t see obvious & strong fault on either. Yeah, maybe SW could of moved faster, maybe. The callsign was blocked with the t/o clearance, 28R. Now SW is the only plane it would apply to, besides the callsign, the rest of the transmission came through. Yes tower could of issued it again...
