    Primary vs Advisory EMS

I went through exactly this when I did my upgrade. My original plan with the Garmin's EIS install was to leave any of the old gauges I could, but in the end I took them all out. I think it's easy to go either way. What I told myself was that: simpler is better, certified for primary has to mean...

    Diversity

I feel like you do, I'd love to explore Canada some day but don't have a pressing need to fly there. And, for me, they'd have to allow basicmed first. When I did my panel upgrade I asked the shop to run a wire for the extra antenna, but other than that installed a non-diversity transponder for now.

Thinking about a Lathe and Milling Machine

Also and...all the tools you can make with your machine tools. I think between making tools and all other projects, I'm about 50/50 on the lathe so far. Ha. Hard to get more "owner-produced" than that!

Thinking about a Lathe and Milling Machine

I got into hobby machining about 5 years ago. Not because I had anything specific I wanted to accomplish, but it seemed like fun and maybe I could pick up some skills if I decide to build a plane when I retire. After some research the two things that drove my eventual purchase: I didn't know...

    Well, this looks like fun...

That's the "lateral limits of the NEW YORK Class B airspace" that we get all the time around here. So this morning, on the first day of nice weather in a while, I see 4 TFR emails from AOPA (who says they don't do anything for us these days?). Maybe I'll wait a bit to go flying up the Hudson.

    Maybe I shouldn't fly? Downwind.

This doesn't read like someone who is not cut out for this to me. Going around was a good decision and it seems you've identified a bunch of things you learned from. I think that's the most important part. Most of us have flights we could have performed better on. Once I confidently landed...

PC-12 Crash In South Dakota, 9 dead, 3 survivors (CFIBlizzard?)

One of them was praying externally: CAM-? [passenger recites traveler's prayer] ** our Father in heaven we're grateful that we've been able to come out here to South Dakota and have a wonderful time with family we appreciate the blessings that we enjoy and we're thankful that...

Is the 182 the plane for me?

It was apparently a factory option. I looked into it a bit and it's also not an easy mod to do after the fact so I'll just be living with it.

Is the 182 the plane for me?

My 182Q is the first plane I ever bought and I love it so much I plan on it being the last. When it's hot on the ground I do wish both windows could open, but mine has a Piper-style storm window on the co-pilot side that helps some. It's true what they say about them, they do lots of things well...

    Man up or not?

If you have actually already made up your mind and are just looking to justify it, let me offer another angle to help with that. What kind of personality do you have? Are you frequently the outlier in group decisions? Do you like sharing your stuff? I'll admit to having that negative trait. I...

    G 3 vs dual G275

Don't know how helpful this might be but here's the 275 next to the G500 in my plane during the install. Looking at the altitude displays the text seems very similar, if not the same size. Obviously it's a bit more cramped on the 275. The G3X has the same screen resolution as the G500, so I'd...

    G 3 vs dual G275

I agree. With how good the 275s are, you don't give up much in functionality and it's more "what would you rather look at?" For me it was: why would I want a bunch of circles when I could make the whole thing one big display?

    G 3 vs dual G275

For my upgrade (hopefully finished this week) I started thinking I wanted two GI275s. But then I needed an EIS, so make it three. Then I saw all the MFD pages they offered and...I should get a fourth. And then I saw another skylane with a 10" display and thought, what the hell am I doing with...

    Comfortable Ownership?

I'll tell my secret for finding the time...no kids! :D

    Comfortable Ownership?

I'll give you one data point as far as "comfortable" goes... I always said I'd wait until we paid off the mortgage before I left the club and bought my own plane. So I waited and bought a well cared for (it was owned by the state of Illinois for all but the last 5 years) '78 182, with 350 SMOH...

    182 Transition

Congrats on the purchase! They're great planes. I plan to own mine forever. I had about 275 hours mostly in 172s when I bought it, had the complex, but no HP endorsement, and my insurance company also wanted a single hour checkout. I flew with a local CFI for 1.4 that was a combined...

    Choosing a flight school

I went to a school an hour away (often more with traffic). My plane is now based there and I'm back at the same school for my IR. Yes, the distance is terrible, but it can work if you want it to. For my private training I would keep my whole weekend free then, on whichever day looked to have the...

    Skylane avionics upgrade

I'm curious about the weight as well. Yes, no more vacuum system, and all those 80's era radios seemed really heavy to me.

Cessna 172H deal - Your thoughts?

Not to pile on, @RossG2000, but I'm still in my first year of ownership and I don't think this can be overstated. Make your first experience a pleasant one. Especially, if you're already thinking you might want to upgrade in a few years. Find a nice plane that you can fly home the day you buy...

    Skylane avionics upgrade

Getting a little tired of looking up at clear blue skies, but finally starting to see some light at the end of this tunnel. First test fit of the new panel went well. They've got a couple of gaps to clean up still, but looking pretty good. All the servos are installed. Engine wired up. New...
