    Descent Rate on Glide Slope

When you fly IFR, numbers become more relevant (since by definition you can't see). But for VFR, look at the darn window. Period.

    Descent Rate on Glide Slope

I'm an engineer too. From one engineer to another: Look out the friggin window with your hand firmly on the throttle (At least initially, as you get more comfortable, you will know your power settings and have to make very few adjustments). That's the right way to do this. You start to learn a...

Accident Case Study: Into Thin Air

One thing I continue to wonder: WHY OH WHY would you go to Aspen? I would have headed South back to New York where it’s flat. Maybe weather was a factor down there, I don’t know?

    Don’t skip partial panel work

Be aware the AV30 is only good for 30 minutes off its internal capacitor (I think it doesn’t have a battery backup like the G5). But the real takeaway I’m getting out is know these little things in case of failure (so you know you have 30 minutes to land before going full partial panel).

Letter of Discontinuance is still valid but my IACRA will expire?

Thanks guys! I think I have it figured out.

Letter of Discontinuance is still valid but my IACRA will expire?

I am in quite a pickle: I have gotten a LoD due to a mechanical issue on the day of my checkride. The catch is my IACRA is about to expire at the end of this month (November). So, does my LoD also expire? i.e. I have for instance passed the oral. Do I start from ground zero again come December...

    Logging the Missed Approach Course?

But they often are. Again, since I am VFR w/CFII acting as safety pilot I think in the end it is OK.

    Logging the Missed Approach Course?

Well, technically speaking, that could be very dangerous since you are below DA and as such the missed approach course may not provide you with the necessary protection, right? A safer option would probably be some DP at that point.

    Logging the Missed Approach Course?

@RussR The question really was, “Why was the DPE so miffed by the entry?” I don’t see anything illegal about it? I would say something like “RNAV 24. Flew missed approach course.” <—— not sure why this is so contentious? I don’t even understand why under VFR w/CFII does it even make a...

172 Crash near KFWN (Sussex County)

https://www.nj.com/sussex-county/2021/11/small-plane-with-2-people-onboard-crashes-in-nj-agency-says.html Anyone have any idea what happened? I’ve flow to Sussex numerous times. The sky divers always freak me out.

    Logging the Missed Approach Course?

I ran into an issue with my log book regarding my CFII logging the missed approach course vs. going missed with a DPE. What I would do in some training exercises is perform a touch and go (mainly to log XC time) and then ask tower to fly the missed approach course as a way to at least practice...

I did my PPL and IFR written before ever sitting in a real plane. Great way to start your adventure!

    VOR navigation question

@RussR So why would you have a DVA if you already have a DD? i.e. after 400AGL I'm good. Why do I need ATC at that point? Noise abatement?

    VOR navigation question

I stand corrected. Yeah, that makes total sense. @RussR It seems if there is radar to support it and a need for it “the DD becomes a DVA as opposed to just a DD”, right?

    VOR navigation question

It is my understanding that a “diverse departure” has been renamed essentially to a “diverse vector area” and the whole purpose of it is to get you to MVA - not an airway per se (even if that’s where you wind up most of the time).
