If this became available, would you?

Bull Moose is a company that modifies the Murphy Moose to use an LS3 with gear reduction. The engine puts out 450 Hp and has been flying for a while. That's more power than I need or want, but if you're flying a big plane it seems to work. Here's the story in Kitplanes Magazine...

Can engine heater reduce/prevent engine corrosion?

The absolute best thing you can do for the engine is to fly the plane regularly and change the oil frequently. If you can't do that, consider giving access to the plane to a pilot that can exercise it regularly.

SU Carbs - ever had them?

I had a 1959 Austin Healey 100/6 with SUs. I bought it after a fire had gutted most of the car. I rebuilt it and drove it for 5 years. Actually, I drove it for 2 weeks, then I worked on it for a week so the time it was actually available for driving was less than the 5 years of ownership. Back...

High Wing Or Low Wing poll

I currently own a high wing Maule for off airport camping. Previously I owned a low wing Grumman AA5 Traveler. In between I had a Pitts S2A and I guess that qualifies as a high wing and a low wing simultaneously. Where the wing is located on the planes I own is driven by my primary use at the time.

    live in hangar?

Most hangars don't have plumbing and that would be a live-in deal breaker for me. Comfy hangout space is another thing and most of the hangars at my home airport have pilot caves built in. Some are attic spaces built above the plane, some are living room style setups adjacent to the plane. There...

Is this the future of electric flight?

Folding wings are great for storage, but you really don't want them folding in flight. I think I'll stick to rivets and aluminum over hot glue and foam...

    What's Flying Like in Retirement?

I retired from full time work as an employee in 2010. I continued working full time as a consultant until 2014 and then slowly started reducing the number of hours I work each year. I'm down to about 1 week per month now and that suits me just fine. My consulting income more than pays all of the...

Someone Just Had a Very Bad Day in D.C.

Don't forget the gyrocopter guy that landed on the Smithsonian Mall in front of the Capital building. He was making a statement. He was focused on some abstract policy issue, but the real statement was that the defenses around the capital are inadequate to deal with a determined adversary. You...

    End of Season Flight

Washington State DOT/Aviation maintains a series of airports in the Mountains that are only open from June 1 - September 30. This video captures my flight to Tieton State airport (4S6) in the middle of September this year. It is a remarkably beautiful place to visit, and provides a good...

    Ideal Flying Video?

You asked for feedback, so I'll give you mine. Since I'm a pilot, I watch flying videos to see something that is unique, unexpected or that leads me to visit a place I've never been. So your videos aren't interesting to me. They capture routine flights to very average places. That said, your...

    Night VFR Poll

The terrain is as important to me as the instrument panel. Flying over farming country at night in a single engine airplane is not nearly as risky as flying over the mountains in the same plane. When I fly across mountain in a single in the daytime, I follow roads through the mountain passes...

Expensing a flight in your own plane.

I have a small consulting business and have often used my Maule for mid-distance trips. Some of the customers I consult for will pay the GSA aircraft mileage rate ($1.26/mile in 2019) for trips when I fly myself. Some will allow the GSA rate (see...

    Air-to-Air Pitts at Oshkosh

what was the camera ship? Was the camera ship pilot someone you had worked with before? Coordination between both pilots seems to be a critical part of getting you into the position to take these great pictures. Do you direct the set-up of the shots on the intercom with the camera ship pilot...

    Aviation documentary 'One Six Right'

Saw it and liked it but it certainly won't entertain anyone that isn't into airplanes. I doubt it made any non-pilots take up flying. For those already in the fold it had some great photography that was planning enough. As a "documentary" about an airport the storyline was pretty dry. It...

What fly-ins do you plan to attend in 2019?

Previous posters have been pretty heavy on opportunities in the SE (plus Oshkosh). I'm waiting to see some interesting plans for fly-ins out west. I prefer gatherings that are off the beaten path. I think I'll attend the High Sierra fly-in on the Dead Cow dry lakebed in Nevada this year after...
