    WSJ article about airplane camping

I know of multiple airports that receive FAA funding and allow/encourage airplane camping. If you have the facilities to support the activity, why not encourage it? Some of these airports even have annual "airport-day" events where on-field airplane camping is advertised as part of the thrill of...

The most epic thing you've ever seen?

My wife and I flew to a ranch in central Oregon to see the great coast-to-coast eclipse in 2017. The flight down there was epic, the eclipse was epic and the flight back zipping over long lines of car traffic headed home was epic.

Flew to Roche Harbor for breakfast a couple of days ago. This August has been tough for flying with lots of fog and low ceilings. Strange weather for this time of year, but the fog cleared early enough that this was a wonderful flight.

South Carolina Breakfast Club 8/18 @ Triple Tree SC00 NO excuses attendance mandatory if you live in the United States not just for Southeast peeps

1900+ NM is too far to fly for breakfast - no matter how good the food is! I did fly to SC00 for their 2014 fly-in, but I lived in Virginia then. Washington State is too far and there are too many forest fires between me and there to head that direction. I did love that 7,000' long golf green...

    WWII warbirds.

None of the above. I couldn't afford to operate any of them! I'd take a reconnaissance aircraft like an L19 Bird Dog that I could actually use.

    I cant find a hangar.

I lived in the DC area when I bought my Maule and the wait time for hangars in that densely populated area was 8-10 years. I didn't want my fabric covered airplane left outside, so I cold called and/or visited private airports with large hangars and asked owners if they had space for a Maule...

    Squeal noise spa-400n intercom

If you have a cigarette lighter USB power supply that may also cause feedback. Pulling it out to see if the squeal goes away could be the cheapest fix ever.

    For Memorial Day

My dad was career Army and he swore me into the service after I graduated from college. He served in Korea and did 2 tours in Viet Nam. I didn't make it a career, but was proud to follow in his footsteps for a spell.

    Next plane...

I'll second the Maule recommendation. The 235 Hp version isn't a lot faster than the 172, but it'll haul anything you can squeeze into the cabin. The back seat is just held in with fast pins, so removing it is less than a 1 minute chore and it gets off and lands very short. My 3000' home field...

What are currently the best EFBs for Android?

I've used a variety of Android devices (hardware and software) for flying over the years. Currently, I'm using iFly EFB software by Adventure Pilot and I'm very happy with it. I like the features, the cost and the enthusiasm of the developers. They actually send me personal emails when I have a...

Try the Basin Harbor resort on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Smooth grass runway with cabins on the water and a lodge with a restaurant. Here's a video of my trip to the resort:

Road Bump in Buying a Plane - No Place to Put It

When I bought my current tube & rag airplane (a Maule MX7-180) I was living in northern Virginia, just outside of DC. I had the same conundrum. I found a house and hangar on a private airstrip that had room to add my plane for a monthly fee. Sometimes I had to juggle planes around to get mine...

I said planes were more fun - not more important. I like having shelter, but my house has never been something I run to for fun. I hate gardening (but I do it), I hate home maintenance (but I do it) and I groan when my property taxes are due (but I pay them). My plane is completely impractical...

    ...

I bought a 180 Hp, 2002 model Maule MX7 in 2013 with 1,000 hours on the engine. I paid ~$100K for the plane back then. At 2400 hours, the engine started making metal, so I bought a rebuilt O-360 from LyCon with the cylinders flowed and ported, the tappets DLC coated and some other engine...

After 7 months, my rebuilt O-360 engine was delivered to my mechanic. Now I need the weather to improve enough to fly my plane to his place with the old engine and swap the new for the old. LyCon promised to get it done in 6-8 months. The new engine build was finished after 6-1/2 months. The...
