PIREP request: hard drive data recovery

Happened to me a while back. Kotar data recovery in San Jose https://www.kotar.us got it back for me. Very pricy, but very happy with the results. Very grateful that Kotar was able to get the data back. They provided a new drive which was essentially a clone of the dead drive. They had...

    Weighing Airline Passengers?

It's not very nice nor politically correct how the plane is insulting the pilot. Schoolyard insults. tsk, tsk. Would probably be better to say something like "mentally deficient". Were you the so-described pilot here? [emoji3]

Airplane Registration expiration exceeds 3 years

Renewing is not the same as getting a new cert. It's just pushing the expiration date out by three years. Think of the certificate issue date as the date the owner acquired the plane. It's good as long as it's being renewed. As long as the registration is renewed, the expiration date will...

    P-factor

Why not? Seems to fit definition 1 below. P-factor is an influence that contributes to a tendency to yaw left when at higher angles of attack. I agree it doesn't fit definition 2. noun 1. a circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome. 2. a number or quantity...

Making the most of VFR cross country flying

Very good advice. One thing you may learn once you start IFR training are the T's. My CFII added a last T to the list: Ticipate. Stood for anticipate, and the point was to always think of the next step and prepare for it as soon as possible. I do have a bit of a quibble with this, or at...

    Flap settings on takeoff?

I pretty much always use half flaps (23°) in my Viking. Here's what the POH has to say about it. I do have to put in a bit of back pressure to keep the tail from lifting, but it's no biggie. You said you're in Knoxville. McGee Tyson or Downtown Island? I took my private checkride at...

Owning a plane and belonging to a flight club

Dues are $55 per month. The Great Lakes is $195 per hour, and the Decathlon is $205 per hour (wet). Here's the club's rental fleet website: https://www.advantage-aviation.com/rental-aircraft/

Owning a plane and belonging to a flight club

I've owned my plane since 2012, but I've also kept a flying club membership. My plane is a 1989 Bellanca Super Viking. It's a fast IFR machine and is great for long cross country trips. The flying club, however, has a 1979 Great Lakes open cockpit biplane and a Decathlon for just-for-fun...

What are the required steps to flying from US to Canada?

Yep. The US CBP on the other hand. Grrrrr. One time they made us completely unload our plane, open up our luggage, and had my son open up his hockey bag (We had gone to Vancouver for a tournament) right there on the ramp, in a pouring rain. Our luggage was open, and we had to back away...

I've flown to Canada several times. Not a big deal. Used the following as a reference. https://www.aopa.org/travel/international-travel/canada

    Prescott Pusher

Looks like the builder had dreams of an A-10 when building the plane. Pretty sure that thing in front is supposed to look like a Gatling gun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Got in trouble with the wife for NOT buying plane stuff :-o

Yeah, I can see that, particularly the height thing. I'm 6' 2", and my head tends to just brush the top. Vikings can be ... cozy. Hope you sold yours to a good home. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

who has right of way, backtaxi vs landing aircraft?

Not at my airport (KSJC). Just a couple of days ago I got this instruction: "Niner Echo Lima, enter three zero left at Bravo, Backtaxi to at least Alpha for wake turbulence, cleared for takeoff three zero left" And a few days before (after landing on 30R): "Niner Echo Lima, turn left at...

Got in trouble with the wife for NOT buying plane stuff :-o

Why in world would you do that?! My wife _paid_ for our Super Viking with her severence pay when she was laid off a few years ago. Poor me, though. Any time she says "Let's fly somewhere this weekend" I have to do all this research and select a place to go. Such a hard life I have...

You guys- I've got a jet

You're right that they usually use Auto Bridge instead of Dumbarton. Kinda funny, that. The Dumbarton and the Train bridges are actually called out on the sectional. I hadn't realized that until today. I've been going to and from Palo Alto on a semi regular basis since 2011, and I'm...

Painful but funny Student radio work - Joplin MO

Maybe not, but there is a Cessna N8263B, and that is the plane that was involved, at least according to the student's initial callup. 6 3 not 3 6 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Painful but funny Student radio work - Joplin MO

That's all on the instructor. 100%. I'm betting the instructor either did all the radio calls pre-solo, or told her exactly what to say before each call. I feel for her, and I hope she was able to find a competent instructor who could actually teach.

You guys- I've got a jet

I wouldn't classify what you did as a mistake. I'd say you used proper radio procedure.
