    What's in Albany?

My wife would say that our son gets his smarts from her. I'm smart enough not to argue! Perhaps a similar situation here? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

    What's in Albany?

Albany is close to RPI in Troy. If you have a teenager who is considering Engineering as a possible field, drop by and take a tour of the campus. My son is in his Senior year there. It's highly rated, particularly in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Sent from my iPhone using...

I did a powered parachute ride and it was awesome.

15,000 (15k) too low for you? After all, you were at 2000k (378 miles!!) [emoji23] These do look like fun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Is it the dumbest thing I've ever done....

Great advice. I bought my plane 9 1/2 years ago, and I average about 100-150 hours per year on it. Looking to retire in about 5 years or so, and then we'll really start to use it. Planes need to be flown. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

    airplane as an investment..different take

^^^ This. Great way to put it. The way my wife and I decided was this: Do we want a plane? Yes Can we afford a plane? Yes So we bought a plane. We use our plane mainly for travel. Sure, for some trips, we beat the airlines door-to-door, and for some trips we are cheaper than the...

    Friendly / non-ornery controllers

San Jose (KSJC) controllers are great folk. I will typically get a "Welcome back" or a "Have a great flight" from them. Palo Alto (KPAO) and Reid Hillview (KRHV) also have good people. And there's this one NorCal guy that is outstanding. Seems like he knows all of us regulars, and...

    Spin Training...busted bravo

Not necessarily. I sometimes rent an open cockpit Great Lakes biplane in Palo Alto, near/under San Francisco's class B and very near San Jose's class C. There's very little extra room in the cockpit, and I rarely bring along an iphone or ipad. Hate to lose one of those while inverted. No...

which plane best fits this mission?

There are 4 seats in my 1989 Viking. There were 4 seats in the 1966 model my father bought in 1966.

    “You Can’t Terminate FF”

That was my thread, and the controller told me I couldn't cancel IFR, not FF. I was in E airspace at the time. I later had a conversation with the NorCAL TRACON supervisor about it. He agreed that the controller was wrong and promised to get them sime additional training. Not quite the same...

    Paul Bertorelli Explains Control Towers

Yeah, in 1948, I imagine P-51s were more numerous than now. No idea at all what a Zipper is! I remember going through my Dad's old mags when I was a kid and reading this article. Made an impression on me, and convinced me that being a P-51 pilot would be a much better job than working in a...

    Propeller windmilling, the truth

Yep. I routinely run a tank dry prior to switching tanks when I'm on long trips. The windmilling prop helps the engine start right back up when I switch tanks and briefly engage the electric fuel pump. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

    Flying GA in Hawaii

No experience with Oahu, But several years ago I rented from Maui aviators (https://www.mauiaviators.com/). Did one half hour flight with an instructor to get checked out and then a couple of 1.5 hour flights around the islands (It took two total flights for everyone in our group to get to...

Buyer's advice: Bellanca Super Viking vs. Rockwell Commander 114

Not an ATC, but it is one of the newer planes. It's an '89. The factory built only maybe 20 or so planes after mine before stopping production. Check out the TAS shown on the Gi275 coming back from a day trip to Santa Barbara this past Saturday. Trueing at 197mph. A little tweaking of...

Buyer's advice: Bellanca Super Viking vs. Rockwell Commander 114

Well, I was at that weight until recently, and we were able to make it work. It's tight, however. Mogas is a nono on the engine. The Viking can be landed quite short (not STOL, Valdez short, but still) and does well on grass.

Buyer's advice: Bellanca Super Viking vs. Rockwell Commander 114

I'll give you my perspective. I've had my Super Viking 9 years and Ikve logged 920 hours in it. We love it. I'm 6'2", and for most of that time have been very, shall we say, hefty. It can be quite cozy in the front with 2 people. I've recently lost a lot of weight (72 lbs and counting)...
