Setting Kohlsman to allow agl indication?

Was this before we had radar altimeters? It would (sort of) make sense in that case.

Setting Kohlsman to allow agl indication?

I agree. As a 'murcan I find it odd that some countries have transition altitudes of 5000', 6000', etc... or sometimes transition alt is given by ATC (wTf?). So you end up with flight levels of FL80, FL100 .... bizzare. 18,000' everywhere! Murca! I think various Airbi have a knob that...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

True statement - except the majority of the controllers within that range are actually quite good. It's the virtual sim pilots that crack me up. Recently, there have been a ton of new folks who probably picked up MSFS and have given VATSIM a go without understanding procedures. And you really do...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

What are you building? I thought of doing this for a time several years ago, but once I got VR working so well I abandoned the idea. I have seen pics and videos of some epic home sim cockpit/flight deck setups.

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

Yeah, built-in ATC in any flight sim I have ever used just sucks. VATSIM works good enough - it's not the real-deal, but it's pretty close. Those kids do a good job. There are a few guys who are real TRACON or center controllers, too. It's just for fun and it adds to the immersion, in my...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

Over the past 1.5 months, I have completely switched over to MSFS from being an X-Plane user for years. The overall simulator immersion is just incredible in VR. Sure, the MSFS flight model is not as exactly accurate as X-Plane. But - the weather depictions, what you see on the ground, the level...

    Airbus near CFIT in Paris.

Sorry - Satellite based Landing System. After modifications to the multimode receiver it uses GNSS + SBAS overlay for higher accuracy. It is available for retrofit on the 320. Available on the 350 and, as mentioned above, the 220. Not sure about other Airbi.

    GoPro Shutting Down

@midlifeflyer Thanks!! Yeah, honestly I would rather get a camera that had a simple 3.5mm audio-in jack... or even a usb-c input that I could get a 3.5mm audio adapter for. But, unfortunately, these don't seem to exist. I was looking at the AKASO ones, but none of them seem to have audio in...

    GoPro Shutting Down

Timely thread for me. Was thinking about getting just one camera to record flights with audio. Was looking at GoPros, but they are too expensive for my first foray into this. Was thinking about a cheap, Chinese knockoff that doesn't have any audio. Then getting an even cheaper digital recorder...

    Airbus near CFIT in Paris.

Looks like SLS is pretty new to the 320 fleet and requires updates to the receiver (SLS needs a multi-mode receiver or MMR), updates to the autopilot as well as the flight warning computer. Also requires updates to the (Honeywell only) FMS - I guess the FMS has to be changed so the database can...

I think the ILS for 27R was out of service. So they were given the RNP. One other thing that stands out is this: Both the Airhub and EasyJet exchanges were in English. The controller subsequently gave descent instructions to an Air France crew, in French, using the correct QNH figure...

    KHEF ARSENAL FIVE question

Yep. I fly out of HEF and this is the SID that gets assigned (to me, anyway) pretty much any time I file IFR. Climb to 800' then D-> SHRLI. Then before SHRLI get pulled off the SID with a clearance direct to some other waypoint (if it's anything other than a waypoint that is going near the IAD...

Anyone know which cities have most winds calm days?

 Exactly! It was especially windy this winter (or so it seemed) around here in the DC area. First non-windy day this spring when I was coming back home, it was like flying on rails. I mean just perfectly smooth coming down on final... right on speed, right on centerline, runway staying...

    Destroying a computer hard drive

Or give it to my 12 year old. She will lose it within 10 minutes. She will lose it so hard it will never be seen again by anyone. Like it was lost into a black hole. Lost to the same spot as her iPhone, expensive earbuds, countless shoes (somehow??), other expensive items. Yep. This is the...

    In-flight turbulence phobias?

Slow it down, if not already at rough-air-penetration-speed. Don't worry as much about altitude changes. Try to keep wings level. Take up pickleball? Kidding... it's gonna happen... learn how to avoid it when able (look at PIREPS, turb forecast) if you don't have to fly. Learn how to deal with...
