What's Best, Cheapest Way Reach Lic. & Quals??

Find the best instructor you can...seriously. As a beginning student, I know it is hard to know what makes a good instructor vs bad. Ask around, fly an “intro” lesson with a few different ones. It will be worth the effort. Even if the great instructor has a higher hourly rate, you will likely...

    First encounter with spatial disorientation.

It is crazy. You read about it. You study all about the reasons behind it. It wasn't until I experienced those senses...that I have trusted my entire life...trying to kill me that it became real! :) I'm actually really glad I got to experience it in training with an instructor in the plane vs...

    First encounter with spatial disorientation.

I’m roughly halfway through training for my instrument rating, but no actual time in IMC yet. I have a really good hood that limits most but not all glimpses outside the airplane. Despite trying hard not to cheat, I’ve never experienced the effects of strong spatial disorientation...until this...

Draco crash on takeoff 16 Sept 2019

I don’t know much about the Patey brothers, but what little I have read and seen is down right fascinating. I don’t think YouTube figures in much into the equation of their success.

New spin video from Microsoft's new flight simulator!

I'm watching this closely. Microsoft has indicated that is will not require a subscription. It does appear that the scenery is heavily based on Bing imagery. My guess is that it will likely require an active online connection to stream to your PC. I don't know if that will require a subscription...

    IFR Weekend Ground School

I read/studied everything I could get my hands on (and fit in my schedule). Used the Sporty’s course for test prep. Also did the King’s free online practice tests. Worked out very well.

Using descriptors instead of N number

If I'm close enough to see that you are, in fact a red, and white C172 turning final, I might be too close. My biggest fear is that I somehow missed the other red and white C172 now on a 3 mile straight in for the same runway. I personally prefer call sign, but to be honest, I'd be happy with...

Triple Tree First Week of September

Hate I missed this. My weekend was monopolized by kid’s soccer games. Love any excuse to get to Triple Tree!

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Hi all, new guy here. After getting my private back in 2000 and then taking a 17 year hiatus, I’m back and currently working on an IR.

    IFR: how to build time?

Like you said, it seems ill-advised. I'd be apprehensive logging this way in a single-pilot, non-IR scenario. It just feels like it sets up a potential regulatory "gotcha" if there is no safety pilot recorded in what is technically VMC. With an instructor or safety pilot, I'd still log it...

What NDBs are still on in the US?

T Thanks! Corrected. I’m not dyslexic...but sometimes my thumbs are

What NDBs are still on in the US?

Here just north of Charlotte, NC at RUQ they have NBD Rwy 20. Though, with an ILS and GPS approach to the same runway I’d be surprised if it was ever used outside of a sadistic instructor :D

    IFR: how to build time?

I’m sort of at the same spot, @MacFlier. My CFII wants to knock out x-c time in training. But honestly I’d rather bang out approaches and procedures rather than have him sit as an expensive safety pilot just to get the x-c time done. I think the plan you outlined above is solid. As to the...

    Understanding the whole of IFR

No straight in approaches at KASE? For the LOC/DME-E, I'd say it has something to do with the 6.59 degree angle needed to descend 1860 feet in 3.1 NM between DOYPE and CEYAG.
