    Instrument Checkride Passed!

Congrats, @PilotChase! I used Sporty's for my instrument ground and liked it. 98 on the written. Honestly, I didn't really get much out of the Sporty's videos, though. Decided to try Gold Method for commercial and really like their approach of eliminating questions from the test bank that you...

    Night pattern work

I finished off my night solo takeoff/landing requirements last night. I decided since I still needed to build a bunch of to time to 250, I did night cross counties to different D and C airports. Yeah, I’m still not sure why the day/night dual cross country is required. Night maybe, but the day...

I did make it out to Billy Mitchell, First Flight, and Manteo for my long commercial cross country. Awesome day of flying. Not a single cloud in the sky. Thanks for all the suggestions! GMU and BQ1 are up soon as I have a couple of buddies itching for some good food.

    Air Wagner..... He’s baaaaackk.

I hope the commentary on this video prompted them to take another look at the chart and recognize their misunderstanding. Hopefully that’s why it was taken down.

What's the best vacation you have ever had?

I’m sitting on the beach in Puerto Rico at this very moment. Maybe not the best vacation I’ve had...but this certainly doesn’t suck.:D

    Air Wagner..... He’s baaaaackk.

Ugh...I just watched an different video from that guy. Wants to keep his approach slow because of the weather...until he finds out there is a Medivac that needs priority behind him. So do you choose to accept a delay vector and fly the approach at a comfortable speed. Or do you choose to push it...

Flight Academy not willing to see instructors beforehand

Absolutely. One of my instructors is a retired airline captain. He is hands down the best instructor I’ve had. He loves it too but, there is zero monetary incentive for him to spend time away from his family. He instructs only a few select students...none of them primary.

Flight Academy not willing to see instructors beforehand

The sad truth is that, despite the tone, @Clip4 seems to be right. I would love to instruct full time as a career, but the income potential of the airlines is just too great a pull. Sadly that’s true of too many teaching positions. I’ll be instructing on my way to the airlines, and I hope I love...

Flight Academy not willing to see instructors beforehand

@Gordon Freeman, it’s your time and money and ultimately your safety and the safety of your passengers. There is nothing wrong with wanting to take a few minutes to talk to a perspective instructor. My experience with taking an instructor that was assigned to me left me with 2 mediocre...

Ha, this made me chuckle. Don’t worry, you didn’t do anything wrong. Arguments just happen organically around here :D

Cross country destinations from Charlotte NC

I have family that lives right across the street from Billy Mitchell! That’s definitely in the plans as is landing at First Flight. And as a bonus Concord (JQF) to Billy Mitchell is 250 nm straight line distance on the nose so I can use that for my commercial long cross-country!

    Written test missed questions

I was able to view the question text that I missed on the instrument written, just not the answer choices. The proctor gave me the choice to see.

    Takeoff under the hood?

For the record, I was not asked to do a takeoff under the hood on my checkride...not that I ever expected to. The subject did come up during the oral, however, when talking about part 91 takeoff minimums (or lack there of). The DPE said the she’d done a few 0/0 takeoffs and it was never really...

    Struggling to Land the Plane

Take heart. I passed my instrument checkride today. The DPE said the “Good job. The ride has ended now all you have to do is land without killing us.” And of course it was the worst landing I’ve had in ages...happens to us all every once in a while.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Passed the Instrument checkride today! So to celebrate, today only I will not refer to myself as a student pilot. Tomorrow I will resume because...say it with me...”a good pilot is always learning” ;)

    Struggling to Land the Plane

Anytime I find myself having trouble with my landings it is usually solved by keeping my eyes as far down the runway as possible and thinking “smooth transition” instead of “flare”.
