    ATP Written Question

...hmm I had a response but after looking more closely, I didn’t come up with the right answer either

Entering the pattern and overflying airports

And I could see a case for switching the “preferred” and “alternate” methods. Overflying at TPA + 500’ still potentially puts you in conflict with large/turbine aircraft on a wide pattern at 1500’ AGL. That happened several weeks ago with an Citation trying to get into a pattern full of...

    Flight service

What can I say. I’m a belt and suspenders type of guy. I was flying into an area that I tend to get dropped from flight following...and I had my daughter with me.

    Flight service

I had to call FSS from the air about a month ago. Forgot to close a VFR flight plan filed via ForeFlight when I ended up doing a touch and go instead of a full stop landing. No cell signal in the mountains where I was so I couldn’t close via ForeFlight. Thankfully it was pretty easy since there...

Entering the pattern and overflying airports

@4RNB, check out AC 90-66. I think your decision to overfly the field is fine, especially if the winds were being reported as calm (or there was no weather reporting?) and there was no other traffic to fit in with. Personally, I would have just entered 45 to left downwind and verified wind...

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

I personally know a CFII (headed to the airlines, at least pre-COVID) that never got flight following because he hated talking to ATC.

    Any new CFIs?

Sure! My DPE has 16,000+ hours of dual given so he had a pretty good idea what he was looking for. Thankfully, my instructor, who is also a DPE, had me very well prepared. The exam was comprehensive and followed the PTS closely. 6 hour oral and 1.6 on the Hobbs. We spent a great deal of time...

    Any new CFIs?

I passed my CFI initial yesterday in a ‘67 C172H model. I used TAA in lieu of complex for the commercial so I don’t even have complex time...yet.

    Online ground school for teenager

For full ground school, Sporty's is solid. While I respect the Kings greatly, I share your concern that the today's younger audiences may have a hard time getting past the dated presentation style and humor. And as much as I respect Rod Machado, I fear the same of his style. It's kind of a shame...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Whew! Thank goodness you qualified your statement with “apologies in advance,” Larry. Otherwise one may have mistaken the assessment as arrogant, condescending d-baggery.

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Eric, keep doing what you are doing. In addition to your videos being extremely well produced, you have always come across with the humility and desire to learn from each new challenge. This was no different and I, for one, appreciate it.

    Frikin laser beams

Apparently, a lot of people are just a-holes....myself included according to my wife :dunno:

    Frikin laser beams

Yeah, since I was going between airports only 20 miles apart I opted not to talk to ATC. I thought about contacting approach to let them know and probably should have.

    Frikin laser beams

I decided to get in a night currency flight in on Sunday. On the way back in to the home airport, the cabin and bottom of the wings flashed and lit up like I had either just flown into a thunderstorm or was just about to have a close encounter with another plane. Scared the crap out me, until I...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

That might not be the case this time around. 2 weeks after release and an open source group is already modifying the default A320 with a lot of missing capability. I'm not an airliner guy but it is pretty impressive what they are able to do. Apparently it is so impressive that the Microsoft team...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

I'm sure Garmin gladly took some money to license their name in the sim, but they sure as heck didn't provide any sort of QA....or event guidance on how to implement basic GPS functionality needed to go /G under IFR. It's baaaaad. Really bad...across the board from the GNS430 through the G5000...

    Air Wagner..... He’s baaaaackk.

C'mon....this has to be a parody channel, right? I mean is it possible that Jerry Wagner is aviation's Andy Kaufman?

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

Yeah, it's game...and it's a gateway for new flight enthusiast into the world of aviation...and it's a learning opportunity...and it's another way for pilots who don't have the time or finances to fly as often as they would like to stay connected to aviation...and it's a platform on which one...

    MSFS2020 Disappointment thread

Yeah, it definitely could have used a little more time in the oven. I wouldn’t write it off completely right now, though. There is a lot of really good stuff in there. Give it 6 months and see what incremental improvement the developer is able to make and what third parties are able to do.
