What Commercial ground school should I go with

Sporty's has a relatively new commercial ground school as well. I haven't checked it out, but if it is like their other courses, it is a solid overview but not what I would consider particularly deep. Honestly if you are going to use Sheppard for the written, I recommend getting a copy of the...

    Baron

Ok, so I don't have a whole lot to compare against as the most complex plane in which I previously had time was a C182RG. I'm doing multi training in an A55 Baron now. That is one fast Beech. Maybe one day...

    Favorite Online Ground School?

Never heard of Checkride Prep LLC. But I gotta say that may be the first website that I have ever seen that locks their "about" page behind a login screen. Interesting strategy.....

1 mile and clear of clouds....uh huh. Well I mean, I suppose you could chalk it up to editing discontinuities.

Be a CFI in my old age?

Sorry to hear of your experiences, @Oldmanb777. I know this type of stuff happens, unfortunately. Sounds like your character got you through. Good lesson in doing what's right, not what's easy.

    Is this common or unsafe?

Practicing slide slips keeping longitudinal axis of the airplane aligned with the runway has tangible training value. What is the practical benefit to executing S-turns with 40° heading changes in slow flight 10' off the ground? And is it worth decreasing margins for error, or unexpected...

    Is this common or unsafe?

Probably the best point made so far, IMO. If you want to practice directional control in slow flight, that's fine. Do it at +1500' AGL. How often do we *really* reinforce a good go around decision? In hindsight, this was probably a missed opportunity to practice a go-around maneuver that doesn't...

Current school said won't train in my plane

Sounds like an independent instructor might be willing to do it. Where(ish) are you located?

    Is this common or unsafe?

Hmmmmm...I’ll defer to more seasoned instructors here. I’m not seeing an obvious benefit to doing that maneuver in that scenario, ever.

    Is this common or unsafe?

Is this what your instructor was getting at? If so, it is a good exercise, but yeah, not one I'd spontaneously throw at you.

pilotinstitute.com - has anyone used it?

I used GoldMethod for either instrument or commercial written prep can't remember which one. Good stuff. I really like the fact that it eliminates questions from the bank once you have demonstrated satisfactory knowledge. That is a big time saver. Russ, I haven't looked at your private course...

Top 5 questions to ask a new CFI

Thank you for saying this...as a brand new instructor, these types of discussions are pretty depressing. Experience is the best teacher, but we all have to start somewhere so I appreciate someone willing to take a chance on little more than copious amounts of enthusiasm.

Think the FAA got it right this time

The 400/400 rule for structures doesn’t apply to recreational operators though, right? 400 AGL is the limit (assuming class G or LAANC approval up to 400’) Anyway, now that I’ve watched a couple of this guy’s videos, YouTube has decided to push his stuff to my recommended feed. He has a new one...

    Struggling with lazy 8s

This is true...though I always found it curious that the Airplane Flying Handbook included an illustration showing the maneuver performed crossing a road :dunno: A DPE was actually the one that recommended that I teach it using a road. He said the specific reference wasn’t as critical as seeing...

    Struggling with lazy 8s

While it may not be a ground reference maneuver, I agree that starting the maneuver perpendicular to a road, power line, river, etc. makes the 45/90/135/180 reference points a no brainer.

Think the FAA got it right this time

The guy has no legitimate excuse. He can’t seriously even claim ignorance of the regulations (as if that is a valid defense) as every video has multiple comments pinpointing his violations. Of course, YouTube comments aren't legal advice, but it sort of limits the guy from saying "Oh...

Advanced Ratings While Working Full Time

@abreezy over the past 18 months i have done just what you are thinking. Mid 40s, full-time corporate job, 3 kids (with sports 7 days/week). I started 18 months ago as a rusty, low-time, private pilot who hadn’t flown in 16 years. I just passed the CFI check ride on 11/13. I went all part 61...

Strangest thing you've ever seen in the boonies

Similar theme so I guess it’s not so much strange as it was just unexpected. My wife and I were driving through eastern NC on the way to the Outer Banks and saw a guy sitting on an ATV right at the side of the road playing a little 5 on 1...grinning from ear to ear.
