Red Bull Pilots to Swap Planes in Midair

Already popped up in my YouTube feed…I may even click on this one for giggles.

Plane crash in Johnston County, NC

Commercial student and CFI. Both injured but alive. Appears to be power loss just after takeoff. Pure speculation on my part based on the news video, but it sure looks like the plane was flown under control into the top of a line of trees that took the wings off and absorbed enough energy to...

Can a CFI cancel a checkride endorsement (IACRA)?

Exactly this. I’ve sent students who were absolute rockstars that just let their nerves get the best of them. Just as I’ve had competent but mediocre students rise to the occasion and pass with glowing praise from the DPE.

What’s a good ifr oral/practical test review course

Another vote for the ASA oral exam guide. As far as areas of emphasis to look up, DPEs in my area seem to like to hit lost coms procedures, VMC vs IMC, when to begin the approach from a clearance limit (understanding that there may be a difference between the book answer and the actual...

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

One of my mentors is a DPE. He allows the use of ForeFlight for flight planning on any of his checkrides. …If you show up with a ForeFlight generated nav log, however, you will be required to explain in detail how ForeFlight arrived at its calculations. Most of my students opt for a paper log...

    Cirrus vs. Other for Training

I’m with you especially when it comes to aviation. But my experience over the past several years is different. The old vacuum/gyro instruments (which is technology now what 100 years old?) have failed me more frequently and when I needed it the most. An AI going south in IMC is as insidious and...

Can we talk about the 172?

I’ll use 40 degrees on short fields with obstacles. That last 10 degrees is almost all drag. Great for steep approaches into short fields. Climbing out on a go around if you forget to retract or in the unlikely event your flap motor decides to give out at that particular moment…not so much.

Can we talk about the 172?

M model so the airspeed is primary in MPH, correct? Here’s how I teach the pattern in a 172M Downwind 2200 rpm trimmed hands off for level flight should get you around 100 mph. Abeam the numbers, carb heat on, 1500 rpm, flaps 10, one swipe up on the trim wheel. 90ish MPH Base, flaps 20, 80ish...

    Cirrus vs. Other for Training

I’m a Cirrus TCI, but most of my instruction given has been in 172s. Teaching in a Cirrus is not any harder and my Cirrus clients don’t have any more difficulty learning than my 172 clients. But they are a lot more comfortable :D

Was at EXX earlier this afternoon. Reports are saying it was a Baron that had just departed. Terrible.

    IFR training books?

Hard to find and not exactly what I’d call an easy read, but if you can stick with it, this book is extremely practical. IFR: A Structured Approach https://www.mypilotstore.com/mypilotstore/sep/2206

    Studying for the Written Exam

I used to always recommend Sporty’s to my clients for all the reasons you stated. Kings presentation is cumbersome and dated…just like the jokes from John and Martha. However, my school just switched over to Kings for our ground and syllabus. I have to admit that, in my opinion and despite the...

What’s Your Time Source for Logging Flights?

ForeFlight has that option too. It is definitely the more accurate way to do it vs. the automatic flight log recording algorithm.

    Studying for the Written Exam

@scarpozzi, have you started with a flight school yet? If not, do you have one in mind? If so, check with them. Some flight schools have a ground school like Kings or Sporty’s that they recommend or require because they follow the associated syllabus.

Retaking knowledge test for higher score.

Exactly. The examiner is going to cover what they are going to cover, which usually at least hits on most of the knowledge areas anyway.

I passed my PPL knowledge test, what should I focus on next?

These items will probably receive more emphasis as you progress, but start studying and know the following cold: Airspace – 5 things for A, B, C, D, E, G, and special use airspace. How to identify on sectional Equipment required in the airplane Pilot certification required VFR weather minimums...

My review - IFR6 and IFLYIFR

I’ve put a couple of my clients through an accelerated timeline around 9-10 flying days, 5-ish hours a day over a 14 day window. The first time I taught it this way I was skeptical. To my delight, it ended up working extremely well, I think because they were so immersed in it. As an instructor...

    Takeoff under the hood?

OP here. Talk about blast from the past…and it wasn’t really all that long ago. Now as a CFII, I understand what my instructor at the time was trying to accomplish. Also, sometimes an instructor will have you do things purely for their amusement. ;)

    KGGE Georgetown SC (PIREP)

Only been there once and it was just as you described, @MickYoumans. One man show at the FBO, but he was super friendly and helpful. Pulled the courtesy car right up to the plane and gave us some recommendations for lunch.
