    Takeoff under the hood?

Ok I took the mock ride this evening. The instructor had me do the takeoff roll visual and drop the visor at 100’ AGL. 0/0 is an option he sometimes uses if conditions are right but we had some seriously gusty crosswinds this evening so it wasn’t even under consideration. On a positive note...

    CFI vs other flying jobs

Yeah CFI may be a way to a paying flying job, but if you don’t really want to teach, please don’t. We’ve all probably had the negative experiences with CFIs that really don’t want to be there.

    Takeoff under the hood?

Initially I was thinking the same thing, but the instructor is there to take over if things before things get out of hand. Knowing his experience and having received instruction from him in the past, I trust this guy. ...and to be fair, I did ask him to put me through the wringer to make sure I...

    Takeoff under the hood?

Thanks for the responses! I’m not uncomfortable with the immediate transition to instruments, but I must admit, the takeoff roll is going to take a little extra courage. Good thing is that the instructor has a vested interest in success :)

    Takeoff under the hood?

I’m doing a “sanity check ride” with a veteran instructor ahead of my instrument check ride next week. He told me to plan for a takeoff under the hood. I’ve heard of other instructors doing that as well, but my instructor never did one with me. Just curious what the value is? I understand that...

    First flight in actual IMC...

I listened to a podcast with guy going through ATP in Las Vegas. He said he had the same situation. There was never any actual IMC to get experience in. Yeah, no thank you. Don’t blame you. Icing is one thing I’m not ashamed to admit scares me.

    I agree! Same here.

    First flight in actual IMC...

...and it was AWESOME! I'm about 28 hours into my instrument training and was getting a little worried that I wasn't going to get any actual before the checkride. Finally today was a nice overcast between 800 and 1000 AGL. Wow, what an experience! Sorry to come here and gush...I just still...

What's Lowest Cost Plane to Book Hours In?

Valid questions, and I'm certainly not knocking the experimental/home built market. One of my dreams is to built an RV10 someday. I was just throwing it out there that, personally It would take an extra measure of due diligence...especially in the above scenario of a very enthusiastic but...

What's Lowest Cost Plane to Book Hours In?

Regarding flight instruction in a home built...the flight instructor has a vested interest in riding in an airworthy plane, preferably one in which he or she understands the capabilities and limitations intimately. I’m not saying that once I become an instructor I wouldn’t instruct in an...

    VFR and Above the clouds

It’s a tough one. I took off for an out and back and got above a scattered layer with clear skies enroute to my destination. Forecast was for improving conditions as any morning low stuff burned off. I came back to find overcast at 700’ starting just 6 miles from my home airport. I had turn...

What's Best, Cheapest Way Reach Lic. & Quals??

I am not a CFI but here's my $0.02. Take it for what it is worth. The danger in trying to learn by using sims in advance of getting in the real plane involves the law of primacy. The way you learn something the first time tends to stick. Learn it wrong in the sim and that will negatively...

    Best program?

I’ve used FlyQ, FltPlan Go, and ForeFlight. ForeFlight is definitely my preference, but that choice chains me to iOS. I’d love to give an Android device a shot otherwise.

    First encounter with spatial disorientation.

So I had another training flight today. We had some of the worst turbulence I've yet to fly in. I love to fly, but honestly, this one just wasn't fun at all. The good news is that there was not even a hint of disorientation. The bad news...my instructor was seriously regretting his lunch...

What's Best, Cheapest Way Reach Lic. & Quals??

These are great traits! Use them to your advantage...but be cautious as these traits can easily be accompanied by attitudes hazardous to your health in an airplane. While there is always opportunity to refine training to make it higher quality and more efficient through better preparation, new...
