Multi-Engine Commercial Passed - Accelerated Course Thoughts

The journey continues. Got my CFI late last year, passed my ME Comm yesterday. Did the three day course with Thrust Flight in Dallas. $4K including the examiner fee was about as competitive as it gets for an accelerated ME Comm course and the plane is a nice 2002 Seminole. If you are a decent...

Lost Engine- when to pitch for Airspeed

Having not flown them all, I’d still think this is probably true on most smaller aircraft. When you do a power off stall, what do you to do to make a 172 stall? Obviously, the answer is hold the nose up, and it takes more and more force to do it as you get slower because the nose wants to drop...

    Glass or steam?

Was gonna say this. Glass is “more expensive” until you’ve overhauled an AI two times, replaced a DG, a vacuum pump, etc. and could have just put dual G5s in for the same cost you’ve spent repairing outdated equipment. I would never buy a plane at this point that doesn’t at least have some...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

First posted in this thread when I was working on my PPL back in 2014. Now a recently minted CFI.

Security Awareness Training for Independent CFI

Recently got my CFI. I took AOPA's TSA security awareness training. On the certificate, it has a spot where the authorized flight school official is supposed to sign. But I'm independent, so do I just leave it blank and just sign for myself as the "flight school employee?"

    CFI Checkride Done

Probably 4 months start to finish. But there were a some delays. Plane was in annual, had some out of town stuff. Hours wise, I doubt I flew more than 15 hours towards it. The flying was easy. The book learnin' was the hard part.

    CFI Checkride Done

A few years after getting my CPL, I passed my CFI check ride today. As expected, the oral was much tougher than the flying. Made a mistake on airspace that I had to clean up and had some other hiccups. There's just so much information, and I can't recommend ASA's oral guide enough for...

NAV/COMM went out. What Are the Options to Replace?

Our club 182's secondary Nav/Comm went out (Garmin 430 is the primary). We also have a GNS375 that does WAAS/LPV, so that's a dual GPS setup with one working radio and one working ILS still. The GPSs currently share a CDI on a switch to go back and forth. Now, for IFR, we absolutely need a...

    ADS-B waiver for DC FRZ?

You just have to let Potomac approach know, schedule the time, and then call them when you are leaving. I did it about five years ago with a plane that was having transponder issues.

How much will airplane prices drop in 2020?

Most of the people who own planes aren't in the financial position to be overly harmed by coronavirus. Yeah, people are taking a hit, but few and far between are the guys so heavily hit they've gotta list their C182 for 80% it's value. Stocks are already approaching all time highs again and...

    Diamond DA40 vs Cessna 172

Every 10 minutes is overkill. That may just be that rental outfit's personal policy. Every 30 minutes will do just fine.

    Diamond DA40 vs Cessna 172

G1000 equipped planes have backup instruments and the G1000 itself is two separate systems that can work independently if one fails. You are much, much more likely to suffer a vacuum failure that leads to spacial disorientation than a glass failure that does so.

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

Such a familiar story. Aviation may hold inherent risks, but it doesn't have to be this dangerous, and time and again, we see the same fact chain play out before a crash involving bad weather. I sincerely hope I maintain the ability to say "no" in situations like this as I do more commercial...

    Painting Plastic Interior Trim Parts

We are replacing some broken plastic pieces in the 182 and are talking about repainting all of it, as the older stuff is badly discolored but otherwise not cracked or brittle. From what I understand, the FAA is fairly lax about interior upgrades as long as there are no structural changes (and...

Lax jet dumps fuel on school.

A major cooperation doesn't get to dump fuel on school children and then just say "go take a shower." They will pay a price here, and honestly, they probably should unless an emergency mandated it. We don't live in a world where someone can dump fuel on people and then say tough luck.

    Buying a plane with non-waas G1000...

I'd be weary of buying any plane with such an expensive, yet outdated piece of equipment that isn't modularly replaceable. If you have an old 430 and it craps out, you just go spend 10K and get a new fancy 600 series. But if that older G1000 craps out, it's a huge repair bill (if you can even...

    5 Day Accelerated Commercial Training

I ended up staying local and being glad I did (only spent like $2500 total getting the commercial rating), but when I was looking at accelerated programs, Livingston Aviation was the best deal with the combination of best good reviews. They are in Iowa I believe. I think it's $2,975 for their...

    Buying a Plane... mid-overhaul, 0 SMOH

It’s concerning that he had you convinced this would be a SMOH engine when a top OH is not that. Sounds like he’s trying to play you.

Lafayette, LA 8 passenger plane crash

The most reasonable explanation is pilot induced loss of control. As you said, it's unlikely it was engine related and I doubt the wing just fell off or something. Going immediately into IMC with 1/4 mile visibility will always be an increased risk. These are the kinds of accidents that so...

Lafayette, LA 8 passenger plane crash

Low ceilings and terrible visibility across the deep south. Trying to get to the game the same day probably played a role in the decision to go.
