Filing IFR routing at my home field

Another way to do it is to file from airport to same airport, and put an initial approach fix in “route”. Controllers don’t really care, but I’ve heard the computer sometimes does.

    Memorable Resturants on/near field

Just as an update: BQ1 - Pik 'n' Pig - the restaurant burnt down in a smokehouse fire a month or two ago. Overnight fire, nobody hurt. Those of you from BBQ-land will know this is just the mark of an authentic place. They'll rebuild, but will take a little while. JNX - Sam's Flying Scoops -...

Appears that I'm grounded for 2 years, now what?

Assuming you get your health otherwise in order / stable / figured out, isn’t LSA still an option short of the two-year window for getting back in the certified game? I echo the “either take a break or keep flying with an instructor / friend once in a while” answer, with one additional option...

Any Non-Passenger Charitable Orgs for Sport Pilots?

Wow, that's a weird scam. Seems like the wrong combination of high effort, easy to get caught and low payoff... Weird.

Cessna 414 down in Yorba Linda

I know that all of that data dumps into ForeFlight's "track logs," which can be pretty fun to look at after a flight. (Maybe it's useful to students as well? For me it's just entertainment.) And I think the Stratus records it so that even if ForeFlight isn't running the whole time, the track log...

    GoPro prices?

Interesting! I bought two new back then; maybe I should sell them... Right; I got the Session because of its footprint. I figured if I was going to strap something to the outside of my plane, the smaller the better. Then again, it goes on an already-draggy part of an overpowered 182 most of...

4th July flight for fireworks sightseeing over LA (Los Angeles) Basin

My wife and I flew over Durham, NC last night. Pretty cool seeing every little neighborhood / personal show, and the show at the local minor league ballpark. The bigger local displays are Raleigh, Cary, and Chapel Hill, all of which were on the horizon.

    Question re Approach

Yes, I'm not a TERPS expert like some here, but you're exactly right: If you only have a localizer needle and an ADF, you can't identify WAPGY and therefore the MDA is 1080’. If you have DME or GPS and therefore can identify WAPGY (and/or presumably if ATC can inform you when you're passing...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

Ha, we did see the swimming pigs in the Exumas. Did a little day tour that included that, Thunderball grotto, the iguanas, etc. Fun, if slightly head-scratchy, time. I would still recommend the book, mostly for pre-trip planning. It lays things out well, and has a page with picture and details...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

Glad it was entertaining / useful! Working on the pictures! Will reply here when I have a few ready. Yes, I think the quiet off-the-beaten-path route is what we might take next time. My wife (and credit card point balance) demanded the luxury hotel experience this time, so what's what we got...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

The book will tell you that all international flights (obviously) and inter-island flights to/from Nassau and Grand Bahama require flight plans. This is where things get weird in a couple of different ways: - In addition to flight plans, apparently all inter-island flights now require...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

This got even longer than I thought it would, so TL/DR: Flew from Raleigh-Durham to the Bahamas via Fort Lauderdale Executive. Bought the AOPA Bahamas guide book thing and it explained requirements pretty well, but there were still some surprises along the way. Just like everything I've...

    Med Express Question

Sounds like you know what you're in for, at least. That's entirely impossible, based on how the LSA rules are written. (Unless you're talking about gliders or balloons.) See FAR 61.23(c)(2)(ii) https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/61.23

AMEs: Has BM affected your volume?

I agree the untested nature of basic med liability is a big concern. Generally, the standard of care for malpractice is to be performing care that is at least as good as the "typical" physician doing what you're doing. If you're an AME doing an AME exam, what you "should be" doing is very well...

    3rd class help

Depends what you mean by "childhood" and how long ago childhood was. It seems like these days, a lot of these super weird long-ago discoveries either come from: 1. Electronic medical records that keep a "problem list" indefinitely. I routinely run into teenagers who have "gestational diabetes of...

    Trans pilot question

The MedXPress form has very different wordings for medications and diagnoses. Item 17a asks "Do you currently use any medication (prescription or nonprescription)?" and then instructs you to list them. In contrast, item 18 asks "Have you ever in your life been diagnosed with, had, or do you...

    Super Fun Thrombus Post

Hopefully the real experts will be along to answer shortly, but from an administrative standpoint, I hope you're in the final stages of waiting on an actual decision for the inflammatory arthritis special issuance. I think if you're still in the "back and forth" stage where the FAA is still...

Nav #2 died, replace or ditch completely?

A lot of talk about risk of 430 failure and rescue by handheld GPS. There is also the risk of wandering into a GPS outage that you missed the NOTAM for. Still probably not a big deal with the 430's nav radio plus radar, but just remember that it's possible for the seventeen GPS-enabled devices...

    Flight following question

Usually "cancel radar services" rather than "request terminate," but otherwise yes. They won't ask you to stay with them, unless they give you an option for a reason, e.g. "traffic in 10 miles same altitude, opposite direction, do you want to stay with us until you pass?" Ordinarily (in my...
