CPL stuff: Private, Non-common, common carriage ... oof

If anything, that muddies it more for me. Again, I always believed that the person joining you for a $100 hamburger theoretically couldn't pay more than their pro rata share. This quote, on the other hand, makes me think that if you were planning on going to lunch anyway, and then the other...

CPL stuff: Private, Non-common, common carriage ... oof

I think you've got it. You can't hold out (advertise) as a carrier, but you can hold out as a pilot all day long. You can post on facebook or message boards or whatever "hire me to fly your plane." You just can't post "hire me to take you to Chicago." I'm with you... The simplest example of...

    ADHD, OCD, Tourette's

I had a friend like this in college: If she got tapped on one shoulder, or someone whispered in one ear, she would feel really uneasy until the same thing happened on the other side. She certainly wasn't debilitated by it, but I think you could easily make the argument that she was distracted.

61.31L, you don't need to be rated to fly an experimental solo

I never looked into this rule super deeply, because I never intended to use it, but I remember someone (so yeah, take that for what it's worth) saying it's intentional, and meant for people building / inventing things from scratch that may or may not fit in the rules yet. I remember it being...

    Combined Private pilot/instrument

I doubt it. I believe (14 CFR 61.73) that qualified military pilots don't need to take any checkride. There is a brief multiple-choice test on civilian rules, and then the pilot get a commercial certificate and (if military instrument rated) an instrument rating. Plus a type rating for anything...

    Combined Private pilot/instrument

Sure; I think there's a limited number of people who would benefit, which is probably why it's very rarely used. Personally, I'm a big fan of people becoming comfortable flying themselves and others on cross-country flights as an "established" VFR pilot before diving into IFR training. But I...

    Combined Private pilot/instrument

I would guess it has to do with dual cross-country time being used quite a bit to double-count as instrument instruction and XC PIC time on the normal (PPL first) pathway. If you couldn't get your PPL, you would need to accrue many more hours overall, because none of the instrument instruction...

    Lunch near Huntington, WV?

Hello all, Flying tomorrow from Raleigh-Durham to Indianapolis, and trying to plan a fuel / lunch stop somewhere around halfway. I'll be taking off with enough fuel to make it 200nm from RDU with comfortable reserves, which puts me around Huntington, WV. Any recommendations?

    Creating a “burner” phone number?

If you're halfway technical, Twilio is the gold standard for building out voice- and sms-enabled services. Would be simple to set something up like this. Charge is something like $1-2 per phone number per month, and about 1 cent per text, but incoming from (presumably) student and outgoing to...

    London, England GA options?

Interested to hear what you find; my suspicion is that unless this is a big priority for you, it isn't going to be worth it. As one data point, if you go out to "London" Oxford airport (EGTK), about an hour and a half (when there aren't rail strikes) outside London, there is a flight school...

Got Scammed on “Checkout” flight - Advice?

Agree with the others that "their plane, their rules" prevails. I've declined to join clubs/FBO rental lists because of 90-day recurring checkouts, since any club I joined would be to have a plane to fly when my (partnership) plane is down for maintenance or in use by someone else. I was...

    Misdemeanor AME

Deferral is fine as long as the questions / additional tests / whatever are followed through with and results in an issuance (eventually). Deferral doesn’t mean denial, but deferral automatically turns into denial in 90 days or something if you’re not moving towards issuance. So for Basic Med...

    “GPS required for TAA”

That's a weird one. Any idea why?

    “GPS required for TAA”

No, as mentioned above, there is a feeder from HLI. Just not from MEM.

    “GPS required for TAA”

Makes sense. It's times like these when I realize that after flying with GPS for so long, I forget some of the regulatory restrictions on the equipment code formerly known as /A. For example, from the charts, it's clear that KAWM -D> MEM -D> EFPUB -> ILS 18 KOLV could be flown safely at 2500'...

    “GPS required for TAA”

Is there a reason they don't have a feeder route from MEM?

    Want To Buy Life Raft

I rented one from Inflatables International (https://www.inflatablesintl.com). Four-person, non-TSO is 395.00 per 7 days (rounds up to the nearest multiple of 7 days). For that price, if you're going to take more than a trip or two, it makes sense to buy. But rental is easy.

Just got my new Geezer Med, but how does FAA...

Good point. Would hate to be sipping hot cocoa next to a cozy fire, looking out the window at the swirling thunder-snow and sparkling icicle trees, thinking "if only this damn blizzard hadn't canceled my basic med exam, I could be flying right now!" (Just kidding. I agree with your point; just...

International GA flying and covid testing requirement?

Right, my understanding is that in the extremely unlikely event some kind of action were taken, it wouldn’t/couldn’t be against the traveler without a test. It would be against the operator of the aircraft who allowed that person aboard an inbound flight. (Those just might both happen to be you.)
