Any tips for finding a doc that will do BasicMed?

Yeah, again, with the wording there of "If the applicant experiences any physical or medical limitations that would potentially affect their ability to tolerate the demands of racing, approval should not be given," I sure as hell wouldn't sign it. Again, I think this whole medicolegal structure...

Any tips for finding a doc that will do BasicMed?

DOT is like FAA medical. There are specifications the MD is certifying you meet. Would be interested in the form for the racing physical. Many say something like “no greater than average risk” or similar which is much more reasonable to sign than “don’t know of anything that could interfere.”

Any tips for finding a doc that will do BasicMed?

A class 1/2/3 FAA medical references a giant book of medical standards for AMEs, with a big list of what passes and what fails. Have high blood pressure? Have a stroke while flying? The AME can point to the big AME book and say "look, the blood pressure was within the limits on the big AME book...

    VOR / ILS endorsement?

I agree that good VOR navigation requires familiarity that someone who trains learning only GPS might not have. That being said, I think requiring a newer IFR pilot an endorsement to use VOR/ILS is exactly as likely as requiring an older IFR pilot an endorsement to use GPS. At some point, you...

    How would you finish training?

Are you a "going at your own pace for fun" person or a "trying to be efficient for an airline career" person, or something in between? If own pace / for fun, I'd say finish the IR first; you can probably do that in 10 hours with dedicated practice / CFII time, and it sounds like the written...

    Civil Air Patrol questions

This is the most shocking part to me. I'm not surprised there are *******s who would try to use CAP wiggle their way into company's vet benefits or something like that, as inappropriate and scummy as that is. But if the company works with the military, and you have somebody going around...

Do they put freight on RJs?

That's the point: we're not sure, but the airlines are damn sure, and are pricing accordingly. Common sense is a wonderful thing, but it can't compete with sales data on every ticket purchase over the last 15 years. And even that can't compete with data that covers every click on their website...

Do they put freight on RJs?

My understanding is that they are counting on most (price-conscious) personal travel purchases to be made in advance, and for most last-minute bookings to be business trips that are going to happen whether the price is high or not. So even if it means leaving seats empty, they'll increase prices...

    Sport pilot question

Your sport pilot license is not revoked -- you still have the license. But you are not able to exercise its privileges until you pass an FAA medical. So you don't lose your license, but you're not allowed to fly once you fail a medical (or have one surrendered, suspended, or revoked)...

Approach naming when DME is req'd

True, I've always found arcs weirdly easy to fly (twist frequently, turn approx as much as you twist, turn a little more if the DME drifts up, delay your next turn a little if DME drifts down). But, the transitions on that missed approach (blind climbing turn to radial to arc to radial/radial...

Approach naming when DME is req'd

Yes, very cool approach. But can you imagine an instrument check ride where you're asked to fly that, with radial step-downs, through the full missed, which is a climbing turn to track a radial to turn onto another DME arc to a holding pattern on a two-radial (or radial-arc, but I imagine in the...

Approach naming when DME is req'd

Wow; even my favorite DME-arc-final approach at MTN doesn't have DME in the title anymore? That's kind of a shame...

US Sectionals have lost foreign detail

I'm not sure how to parse this, but from the September 8 charting notice: Effective November 3, 2023, Visual Flight Rules (VFR) aeronautical charts will no longer make reference to emergency value in private airport charting. Only private airports with landmark value will be retained and...

3rd Class SI stuck in HIMS

I think an easier way to think about it is, BasicMed is this special thing created by Congress (with the literal required regulations written around it by the FAA) and it requires an FAA medical to get. But as others have said, the FAA in no way thinks of a medical as a door to BasicMed...

    Bidding for hangar lease???

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I like the "free(r) market price, but with some ratio of fuel sales counting towards hangar lease" solution.

    Bidding for hangar lease???

Yeah, I'm very sympathetic to the supply/demand argument, but also the fact that the uncertainty of price year-over-year is a disadvantage to the product. This is one of those places where a middle-ground approach could work. For example: Field has 50 hangars. Assuming current leases can be...

What is the demand for CFI who teaches upset recovery/aerobatics?

Agree. There used to be a (non-FAA) designation for aerobatic instructors, but apparently that has been discontinued? Kind of a shame they did away with it; I would have a hard time going up to learn acrobatics with someone who didn't have some kind of bona fides. Absent that...

Cold, hard, non-sugar-coated answers please. How many hours before a student should move on?

I trained in quiet airspace, so take that into account if every flight is involving an hour of taxi time or something, but ballpark I would say: if you're not getting close to soloing in 20 hours (like, maybe haven't soloed yet, but see it as something that's actively coming up), I would try a...

Getting private pilot license with night flying restriction

I agree, in cases like this where it's basically the exact same topic. I think there's something slightly less complimentary to be said about posting "wait how does this compare to a dual G5 setup" on a decade-old classifieds ad for a GNS430.

Getting private pilot license with night flying restriction

Strong work on the 7-year-later reply, but my understanding is that not much has changed: To get a PPL, you need to (at least one time) get a third-class medical. Part of that medical is a color vision test. If you pass that test, you have no problem (until next time you renew your medical). If...
