I have a Cessna altimeter and another one out of a Luscombe. They appear to have the same pitch of the shaft onto which the adjustment knob fits. A .5mm thread pitch gage fits pretty well. Someone over on Practical Machinist suggested it might be 4-48, and that I try a 24 TPI gage to see if it...

Okay. So it's true that it should just pop out? I wasn't positive how it worked and didn't want to force it. I saw a big c-clip underneath and sometimes there are tricks and hidden complexities in things.

How does one remove the lens from an altimeter. I removed the ring from the front and assumed the lens would come right out then, but it doesn't seem to want to.

Your comment prompted me to Google it. Seems like ammonia or alcohol can do bad things, although I'm not sure exactly what. Windex actually makes an ammonium-free window washing fluid, which seems targeted to acrylics. I may try that. I think my window is none the worse for wear after the few...
