Buying a plane with damage history

Heck, we're talking about 50 year-old aircraft. The only difference between an airplane with 'damage history' and one with 'no damage history' is the honesty level of the owner. C.

Looking for buying advice. A need for speed in new plane.

I hope you're speaking figuratively because the 2-seat Lancair/Glasair are way smaller inside than a Mooney.

    Washington/Oregon/Norcal Cool Places To Fly

Pics or it didn't happen. Best food in Columbia is at the Columbia Kate's Teahouse on the east side of town. Oceano is great if you like the beach. They have bikes you can rent and several food options nearby. C.

    Avionics log-files analysis / fdm

I think you mean quotation marks, but we get what you're saying. The trend certainly seems to be towards the collection of more data and analysis. What it is used for is another discussion. I don't see any real reason for concern, at least in part 91 ops. I recall certain people freaking out...

    Washington/Oregon/Norcal Cool Places To Fly

Oh man, so many great places along that route. Copalis (S16) if conditions are right. Only place on the West Coast you can actually land on the beach. Nehalem Bay (3S7) used to have great camping right on the water. Haven't been in years, but I'm sure it's still open. Awesome. Tillamook...

    UBG-16 questions

Yeah, I have an old, old Dell laptop with a DB9 serial port on the back that I keep around and its ONLY use is for downloading the UBG data. The battery is only good for about 30 minutes, and the screen is so dim I can barely read it, but it works! At this point, even the USB-A dongle is...

    Early model 172 six pack

Potential to change to a '6-pack' arrangement depends on the model year. The earliest 172s, '56-'58 had the instruments spread out across the full width of the panel (like the 140s and 195s from the late 40s). Radios and switches were mounted directly below, so these will be the hardest to...

    UBG-16 questions

The EI rep has been hinting at a new data logger for these old legacy products for some time. Who knows - maybe we'll see something at OSH? Call me the eternal optimist. C.

    Best Portable ADS-B IN?

Yes, I use ForeFlight and in the upper left corner, it shows the device you're getting data from and the signal strength. In my case it says "DRX" (the device name) and signal strength is never better than 'marginal'. Sometimes 'poor'. I don't think I've ever seen 'good' and I live in LA where...

    Best Portable ADS-B IN?

Is there any consensus on the best portable ADS-B 'in' receiver? GDL-50, Stratus, Stratux, etc? Don't need all the bells and whistles (ADHARS, music). Just looking for the best traffic. I have an older Dynon DRX (now discontinued) that was a huge improvement over the Scout, but ForeFlight...

Annual Cost for 182 Vs 210

$1,800 for 24 hours of shop time = $75/hr. Seems in the ballpark for a small GA airport. C.

Annual Cost for 182 Vs 210

Totally agree. As a practical matter, any shop that does Cessna MX will have one just to save time (and effort). There are also other special tools that Cessna sells to assist with proper gear rigging on 210s. If they don't have a mule, they probably don't have those either. C.

Annual Cost for 182 Vs 210

If you're talking about the early 60's aircraft, there is a good reason 210s of this vintage are typically selling for LESS than an a 182 of the same model year. Check the numbers yourself, but most folks don't think it's worth paying 2-3 times the maintenance and insurance just to go 15kts...

My post was censored and taken down by EAA on their forum.

Okay, I have to admit this one made me LOL. C.

    Structural Failure

I'll admit the thought crosses my mind also when I hit some really rough air in my 182. Then I consider the 80 million flight hours collectively accumulated on the 182 fleet to date, and I'M gonna be the first one to snap off a wing? That's some ego right there! Human nature really makes me...

    Cessna 210C Model

Don't let me discourage you, because I'm a huge fan of the C210 - but there is a reason why the early models are so cheap compared to later models, or even similar vintage 182s. The retract gear adds a lot of complexity (and maintenance expense) for not much extra speed - maybe 15 knots...

    Cessna Underwing Lights

Do you have the interior rear dome lights? There should be a switch on the pilot's-side aft door post that turns on the back seat lights. The underwing lights are wired in parallel to these. So while I doubt the wiring is already in place, it should be super easy to just run a single wire from...

NPS attempting to close airstrip at Stovepipe Wells

I was at the meeting last night also. I was the one who asked about previous work done on the strip. They admitted that they haven't spent a dime on either runway (Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek) in over 16 years! Even so, the condition of the strip is still usable as-is. I believe the...
