Approaching the end of the road

You don’t say if this is a private or a municipal airport. Or if they take federal funding. But generally when this topic comes up, a city or county has leased an individual or corporation exclusive rights to earn revenue from an airport operation in exchange for the city not having to hire a...

How to calculate a value for airstrip on my land?

The real question is “what is the property worth to your neighbor?” He’s dead in the water without your end. If this project develops the way you foresee, your side is going to be way more valuable. If he cuts you off, you can just extend the runway in the other direction. If I were you...

Cfi lesson plan from scratch or pre made lesson plan

No opinion on store bought vs homebrew. But after all the stories I’ve read about CFIs abandoning students to go to the airlines, if I were a student I would demand a copy of the written plan in advance for myself. That way if my CFI moves on to the airlines or I change CFIs we wouldn’t have...

Forward Slips with Flaps on a Practical Test

Weigh it all against the cost of the checkride & the fact that your student might not get back on the DPEs schedule for months. Play it safe & down the middle with these kinds of questions. Also keep in mind that if the DPE takes strong exception to something like this, it will color his view...

Forward Slips with Flaps on a Practical Test

The point is to pass the checkride. Adherence to the POH is just another mental checkbox for the DPE. you’ll not be failed for sticking to the poh. You might be failed for deviating from the poh. It is an expensive & time consuming gamble if you are wrong.

Forward Slips with Flaps on a Practical Test

Yea, sloshing fuel away from the fuel pickup tube. & we’re discussing a quirk of the 172 design.

Forward Slips with Flaps on a Practical Test

I’d consider the oral and practical just an extension of the written: there is only one correct answer on the test, particularly when it comes to POH guidance. Otherwise, you’re playing roulette with a lot of time and money wasted if the DPE has strong thoughts on the matter. If I were the...

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

Then this policy is not for you. The cost of the airplane has little to do with your financial ability to absorb a loss, btw.

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

We cruised a sailboat in the Caribbean for a few years. We ran naked down there, too, as live aboard hull & liability was out of reach for year-round residence down there. My motto then was, “a small boat & a suitcase full of money beats a 45-footer tied to a Bank.” it turns out that the view...

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

According to AOPA Members, the problem is finding anyone who would write liability only policies at all. I tried several outfits & all insisted on hull & liability combined. Financially, I was willing to walk away from a total loss or foot repairs myself as a result of my own jackassery. Of...

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

You’re clearly not an airplane owner, are you? I don’t suppose you bothered to listen to the podcast. If you had, you’d have learned that this liability-only policy fills a need identified by AOPA members themselves after many older pilots had to give up their municipal hangers not because they...

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

    >Age has nothing to do with insuring against your avionics being stolen or a tornado. Clearly you’re not there yet. Once you turn 75-80, some insurers require a 2nd pilot to fly with you. Others decline all together, even if you’re flying a light sport or quick silver. You can't keep your...

Finally! Liability Only Insurance for Older Pilots

If you are an aircraft owner and need proof of liability insurance to keep your hanger but need help finding an underwriter because of your age, AOPA has worked out a solution. Of course, this policy means a total loss of your plane or repairs to your aircraft after an incident falls on you...

That all depends on how much time you have. I’m way out of currency with IFR and my light sport isn’t equipped anyway. But I enjoy long trips…without a time table. Having good weather skills and a sense of one’s limitations is the important thing…after lots of time to wait out any event...
