    Stearman

Actually when my friend sold his N3N last year we had a couple of solid buyers and sold it in less than 30 days. The N is a much nicer flying airplane than the Stearman and it is all metal with big access panels that go all the way down the left side of the fuselage making maintenance a breeze.

    Stearman

You will spend more getting a project flying than you will buying a nice one. I've helped rebuild a Stearman and they are a LOT of work. The 985 is heavey and burns a lot of gas. Try to find one with a 300hp Lycoming R680 with Ham C/S prop. Better yet find a N3N with the 300 and get a real...

    Lycoming IO-390 Question

A friend is installing a 390 in his Cardinal RG in the next few weeks. I can give a report then. I put a MT 3 bladed prop on a Supercub I just rebuilt and it is very smooth. Don

What happened to model airplane kits?

The Monogram 1/48 kits were a dollar in the 60s. I got a dollar a week allowance and built all the Monogram WWII kits. I could also choose to get two of the 50 cent 1/72 scale Hawk kits. when I was in my early teens I got an airbrush and got pretty good at finishing. A friend of my Dad had a...

In training pilots, how do you handle turbulence?

That's part of the problem with instruction these days. Your instructor is doing you no favors if you have been mostly just droning around all this time. Too many flight instructors baby their students instead of working them hard. If you fly more than once a week you will learn faster. Most of...

    Getting Ready to Solo

I don't know what it is about instruction these days. Under 10 hrs used to be the norm on first solo. I see some of these posts like kiddbats that has 4 hrs and hasn't done any landings. I look at my logbook and we did fundamentals, stalls and take offs and landings on the first flight. I got my...

    Abandoned airplanes

It's a shame that so many airplanes are rotting away. The problem is if it is a Cessna or Piper or other GA aircraft even if they gave it to you it would cost way more than the airplane is worth to restore it. As an example you can buy nice 7AC Champs for around $20,000. It would cost $20-25,000...

    Abandoned airplanes

I have bought two ramp queens over the years. In 1982 bought a SNJ-6 that sat by the tower at the Spirit of St Louis airport for 22 years. We flew in in a 206 full of tools and ferried it to Idaho three days later. Flew it for 8 years. A friend and I bought a Nanchang CJ-6 two years ago that sat...

So, homebuilders...who are we and where do we stand?

I'm just finishing up a certified Supercub. 27 STCs and all the paperwork to go with it. I also hate the FAA. I have the experimental Supercub I built that got bent up next in line, then I can finally work on My Nanchang CJ-6 project that is Experimental Exhibition. I figure if I have enough...

So, homebuilders...who are we and where do we stand?

A friend covered his Carbon Cub with Oratex. He is doing another Carbon Cub and going with Airtech. The Oratex was OK but not near as good as a good fabric job. He keeps the one in Oratex at his place in Alaska and it will sag a bit in cold temps. You do have to have a cub in Alaska, one in...

So, homebuilders...who are we and where do we stand?

The 750 has a lot of ultralight design in it. The biggest thing I don't like is the aileron/elevator control system and the fuel system. Too long a discussion for here. Fabric is not that difficult and with a little care will come out great. The Bearhawk and Rans S-20 have metal wings so you...

So, homebuilders...who are we and where do we stand?

Having built the majority of a 750 and doing the test flights I'm not a big fan. I am an experienced builder and I don't like the way several things are designed. There are lots of better choices for a backcountry airplane. The Rans S-20 looks great and the Rans kits are first class. The Kitfox...
