No crankshafts available for 18-24 months

If you read the docket on AD 20-25-12, you'd see that "oops" doesn't cover it. Even the experts can't agree on what is or isn't acceptable. The metallurgical reports from 2 different labs are not in agreement. And, even when the FAA errs on the side of caution, the argument is made that its...

No crankshafts available for 18-24 months

Yeah, but the crankshaft in question is PMA for many Lycoming O-360 types.

No crankshafts available for 18-24 months

Ughhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!............. Welcome to my world! 3 years ago, I bought a low time Superior XPIO-360 to put on my RV-8. Logs looked good. I got to fly behind the engine before the guy who wanted "more power" pulled it off his airplane. It was a sweet deal! A year later, the FAA...

Most Memorable Flight or Moment of 2022

On April 15th the Hobbs on my little Sonerai clicked over 1,000 flight hours. Then on August 15th I logged my 1,000th flight hour.

I don't use non-stick for anything that takes higher heat. I don't like eating teflon.

    Pilot Cooks of America

I use only good quality non-metallic spatulas in my non-stick pan. And, I only use it on medium low heat (thats as low as my modern gas range will go). Good for eggs, pancakes, french toast and such. Just have to give it a good 4 or 5 minutes to warm up before trying to cook on it. And, if...

I too subscribe to the "not my circus, not my monkeys" school of thought.

    The downwind turn myth

Was reading a book about Billy Mitchell. Apparently the early Army pilots wore spurs as part of their uniform. But, the spurs damaged the aircraft so they were banned in the cockpit.

Do you fly just to get cheaper fuel? Unleaded avgas?

Oh, I never said it'd be cheaper than 100LL. Just that economy of scale might bring the price down, '...some.'

Do you fly just to get cheaper fuel? Unleaded avgas?

Sooner we get the lead out, the better. My hope is that, because there will no longer be a need for segregated distribution for the leaded fuel, distribution costs will decrease, and as distribution ramps up, "economy of scale" will help to bring costs down, ....some. Also, getting the lead...

I'm not sure what to say...

I took a "bush flying" course up in Alaska. It mostly consisted of flying PA-20s 100-150' agl along rivers, landing on and taking off from gravel bars and primitive back country strips. It looked very much like the kind of flying posted in the video. And, ....its a heck of a lot of fun!

    [na] WiFi Home Thermostats [na]

Nest had a bad run of smart thermostats. I installed one for my mom & dad 2 years ago and it failed a week later. We live on opposites coasts so one of my cousin's son (who happens to be an HVAC tech) fixed it for them. I think it was replaced for free under warrantee. Nest and Ecobee both...

I'm not sure what to say...

Well if the description of the events leading to this off airport landing are correct, I'd say, 'Good Job!'.

What is the fluid inside a slip indicator?

TT-N-95B Aliphatic Naptha. Very close to Stoddard Solvent, but not quite.

I suspect there are a lot more Ford alternators (and voltage regulators) flying on aircraft than anyone will ever admit too.

    Misinformation Effect

Used to be that hangar bs sessions never went any further than that. And the flyers that weren’t around, and their family, didn’t have to suffer the criticisms of Monday morning quarterbacks. Nowadays anyone with a computer can put their opinions in front of any number of folks who’re perhaps...
