    PA-32 down Brentwood, TN

    Cirrus down MYF (San Diego)

I don't want to second guess the controller, and she did sound busy. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn't hear the "EMERGENCY" call, but I would think the response to hearing someone say on frequency that they can't control their trim wouldn't be "aircraft with a trim problem...

Lost GPS While on RNAV Approach in IMC

Just FYI. Was departing El Paso one afternoon and pretty shortly lost signal on both my 430 and 530. My iPad was still getting a signal and showing my position and speed, etc. I was annoyed thinking about how I was going to troubleshoot this 430/530 issue and how much money it was going to...

    Inflight weather map for backup

Yeah. The plane came with it, so that was fortuitous for me. I still don't completely trust it, but it makes it nice when what the radar is showing matches up with ADSB and what ATC is saying. Just adds to the warm fuzzy.

    Inflight weather map for backup

Exactly. I have an older color weather radar in my Seneca, and despite the cost, when it finally ****s the bed, I’ll probably spring for a new radar. It’s that useful.

    Possible Dangers of Memory Flying

Oh. I know. I was a member of Uncle Sam's Flying Circus for 25 years. A bunch of those as a UPT IP (T-37s). I've written out a couple lifetimes worth of Ops Limits and Boldface. I've also given enough EP sims to realize that no matter how many times we write out Boldface sitting at a desk at 1G...

    Possible Dangers of Memory Flying

Times and ideas are changing. At least in the airline world. I think the HF (Human Factors) gurus are realizing that even when Immediate Action Items/Bold Face/Red Box Items/Phase Ones (whatever they're called where you fly) are drilled into your head ad infinitum there's a good chance you'll...

    Procedure Turn Question

In the AF we drilled into our students you could descent when "outbound, abeam, on a parallel or intercept course." The law of primacy being what it is, I'd start by descent when I hit QUIRT and finished my left turn and was tracking 007.

    Make DST permanent!

I’m here in AZ as well, but SS today is 5:48pm. It’d be nice if it stayed lighter longer.

Embraer runway excursion at Paris Orly

I agree, the weather actually looks pretty benign. Paris de Gaulle (CDG) is less than 5 minutes away with a couple of 13,000'+ runways. Never mind. I looked at Orly's runways and they have 2 runways over 10,000 feet. Should be able to stop most anything in that distance, even if the runway...

    Possible Dangers of Memory Flying

This is cute, considering it's coming from a (IIRC) BUFF guy LARPing as a fighter pilot. ;)

    Airline Pilots?

I'd say the biggest advice I can give you as a long-haul guy is if you can keep some control on your (1) diet and (2) exercise on the road, you'll be way ahead. Now, this is a more of a "do as I say and not as I do" kinda thing, because the diet control somehow seems to elude me. I don't know...

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

Every time someone mentions their "personal minimums" there always a few posters that go on about "how if you can't fly to plate minimums, you're not worth your salt" and "why even bother having the ticket?" or some other slam on a guy or gal who sets their comfort level somewhere above what...

Around the World in Four Legs

Ha! That's some pretty specific inside baseball there. One bite, then it goes in the trash.

Around the World in Four Legs

There is. Each plane has a logbook where we can write up discrepancies. As of about a year ago, we ditched the paper logbook and do everything online now through an app. The app has not replaced the eye roll from maintainers when they ask "are you going to put that in the book?" and I say "Yes."

Around the World in Four Legs

I just fly ‘em, I don’t fix ‘em, but from what I understand these days the B check is combined with multiple A-checks. Like you do some B check stuff on A check number one, a little more on A check two, and so on until you have credit for the B check.

Around the World in Four Legs

It can. These planes are always under some maintenance. Pre- and post-flight service checks (oil, tires, brakes, etc.). If the next flight is an ETOPS flight, there's an ETOPS check to do. Then planes will undergo A, C and D checks on schedule, with the A check happening every 6-8 months and a...

Around the World in Four Legs

It really wasn't that bad. Long-ish layovers in Paris and Osaka (32:30 and 45:00). The crappy one was only 20:18 in SIN. The leg to CDG was single augmented. CDG-SIN and KIX-MEM were double-crewed, so plenty of rest during the flights. I would never turn down longer layovers though.
