    O’scope

My 1980-ish four channel 150MHz Textronix cost about $3,100 when new. I retired it years ago, when replacing dried out electrolytic caps became too much trouble. It was indispensable for TTL repair, troubleshooting, and calibration. Now get off my lawn.

The end of flying as we know it??

Posted in June 2018. Now that 60% of that ten year development cycle has passed, it's encouraging to see the plethora of personal electric quadcopters flying safely in urban environments.

Comanche Quirk - How to solve it?

Ten amp breaker, top right corner. Both drawings are similar, they apply to two different serial number ranges.

    Saberwing crash in Valdosta, GA

The keyway setup wasn't engineered for "performing ignition switches in flight, the sudden "jolt" on the engine (from shutting down ignition and turning on backup at high power setting) caus[ing] the cam gear key to shear and slip." I would assume the modification done by Wynne might involve...

Comanche Quirk - How to solve it?

Don't just guess, do a proper troubleshooting procedure. You need another drawing, the one that shows the Q2A wiring, fuel pump switch, the pump, and the F1A wiring to the T&B indicator, which may be on yet another drawing. That'll show the entire circuit, which should be inspected for faulty...

RV-12 Fatal Crash - Control Failure 6/6 Auburn, WA

Building an aircraft isn't for everyone. Van's placed three large detail blowups on the assembly drawing. To me that's idiot proofing, but I guess there are some persistent idiots out there.

RV-12 Fatal Crash - Control Failure 6/6 Auburn, WA

There are three detail drawings on the assembly sheet for the yoke installation. While it's harsh to say so, if one cannot understand what the drawing shows, perhaps they shouldn't be building an airplane.

    Cesna down McKinney TX

RIP. I drive past that gravel pit several times a week. The workers did a good job getting a water truck on the wreckage. Probably saved the survivor.

Anomalous Ammeter Readings + Loss of Alternator

Ugh. Looks like the mismatched breaker came from a junk box. Electrically OK but not quality workmanship.

Anomalous Ammeter Readings + Loss of Alternator

Something isn't correct. The device with the jumper on it (a breaker?) isn't connected to the bus as I would expect. The other end of the jumper is connected directly to the bus. What's going on there?

Would cranking for 10 seconds with the mixture in idle cut off pre oil the engine?

This is SOP in IndyCar for cold starts and leak checks in the garage after an engine install, and dictated by the engine manufacturers, Honda and Chevrolet. Since the dry sump reservoir is located above the engine mounted oil pump, it only requires about four seconds of cranking to obtain around...

Scary High Oil Temps - Lycoming 540

Mineral spirits are a weak solvent, and likely to be no benefit in cleaning out varnish in the oil cooler. While I haven't used them in that particular application, I think acetone, hexane, and toluene would be effective. I'm sure some will recoil in horror at the idea of the average bumbling...

I must say you have displayed exceptional fortitude in sharing the diagnosis with us. My prayers will be with you and your loved ones as you navigate this difficult road. I will also be sending you courage and energy through mechanisms I wholly believe in, the power of hearts and minds to...

Anomalous Ammeter Readings + Loss of Alternator

Your connection isn't what you think it is. The OV protector input is connected to the positive battery bus through the alternator field fused connection, and that voltage is fed through the master switch to the OV unit, and then to the input of the voltage regulator. The regulated voltage...

What's wrong with a dutch roll in a passenger jet?

In 1959, a new Braniff 707 on its acceptance flight crashed as after one of the pilots initiated an unrecoverable Dutch roll. Three of the aircraft's four engines were torn off the wings, and shortly afterwards it crashed on a riverbank. Four crewmembers were killed. The instructor-pilot...

Seaplane collides with small boat in Vancouver

Indeed. Even in the most egregious instances, say, when the driver is found guilty of being drunk, killing two young boys in a crosswalk while racing her boyfriend at 81 MPH, and fleeing the scene in her Mercedes AMG 63, the sentence is laughably inadequate...

United Flight Unexpected Diversion to Canada

Bill Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut, crashes in Puget Sound

The difficulties weren't related to the launch, and the issues regarding the second and third stage engines were identified and resolved. The Saturn V with the S-1C first stage was certified for manned flight, and Apollo 8 was cleared for its historic mission.
