    When dreams come true... (long)

I must be a little over-eager. I’m sitting downstairs waiting on my crew while watching the hotel shuttle loading up. I’m thinking, “Where’s my crew?” Then I look at my watch again and realized I’d set both my “Get Ready!” and my “Head to Van!” alarms one hour earlier than needed. Better early...

    What is a CFI?

What’s the point of having dead horses if you can’t beat them on a regular basis??

Should I be scared of airplane ownership

That’s a completely different animal when you’re having the LLC employing pilots. Way beyond a few guys owning and flying an airplane held in an LLC. As I said, there are many ways to run afoul of the FAA regardless of the form of ownership.

Should I be scared of airplane ownership

Well, you can run afoul of the FAA by breaking the rules regardless of ownership style. But I’ve never seen a corporate ownership in and of itself lead to questions. Now if you take a person into your LLC and start flying him around for compensation, that’s going to get you in hot water...

    What is a CFI?

A commendable goal. We should always be striving to be the best we can be. My only caveat there is “Don’t major on the minors”...and Certified vs. Certificated is one of the minors.

Ways Flight Schools Cheat Their Students

Not sure how an airplane unairworthy for solo would be airworthy for dual! Definitely a sketchy school. Sorry you were scammed.

Ways Flight Schools Cheat Their Students

I’m training a brother and sister in a C150 their Dad bought for $15K. They pay $60/hr me. The brother did his checkride just before Christmas at 43 hours. His sister (still in high school) will likely finish soon after her hockey season ends in February. The plane is no Beauty Queen, but more...

Should I be scared of airplane ownership

Having done this, what are the FAA implications? I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

    What is a CFI?

In the English language, common usage factors in. For at least a half century (which is all the more I can personally attest to from experience) “Certified Flight Instructor” has been the most commonly used term. “Certificated”, while maybe technically correct, still sounds very odd to me...

Why I love aviation...(another long one!)

It’s never too late! My very first student 38 years ago was a 65 year old accountant that walked in and said “Can you teach an old dog new tricks?” We both enjoyed the training process and he did great! I’m currently teaching a 65 year old gal. She’s having a ball! She also got 97% on her...

    When dreams come true... (long)

Day Two was pretty easy. It was just a reposition flight of a -200 from IAD to CLE so no pax to deal with. I did get a little concerned when I checked the flow board on our inbound aircraft and saw the attached! Thankfully it proved to be nothing more than a slightly leaky escape hatch (not...

Why I love aviation...(another long one!)

Good question. I’m sure you’d have at least two years like any written. Not sure if a longer period is allowed on a test that doesn’t have a checkride. Call the FSDO and ask.

Why I love aviation...(another long one!)

Never say never! It might surprise you how quickly it can happen if you enjoy getting back into instructing. The AGI wasn’t too bad to prepare for and that’s the only one you need.

Why I love aviation...(another long one!)

Like many of you, I’ve been captivated by aviation since a very young age. The wonder of flight still amazes me as much today as that first airplane ride a half century ago. But beyond the pure joy of flight, I’ve realized I also enjoy the almost limitless opportunities to expand your knowledge...

    When dreams come true... (long)

Well, after just over four weeks of paid vacation over the holidays, I'm finally off and running on my Captain IOE (Initial Operating Experience). They allowed us to give them a list of Check Airmen we'd prefer to fly with, with the caveat that they couldn't guarantee who we'd be assigned. I...

    When dreams come true... (long)

Oh, I’ve changed many things I teach based on the training I’ve received through this adventure, from my approach to Threat and Error Management practices to efficiently managing multiple radios. There’s quite a bit of applicability down the chain.
