    For Sale What's a Stratus 2 worth?

I think that's in the ballpark. I'm entertaining offers.

PIREP: iPhone Xs Max & ForeFlight

I made the mistake of stopping in a Verizon store to ask a couple of questions about my plan options. I casually asked when they expected the new iPhones in. Unfortunately, he said, "We have them in back! What would you like to see?" Dang. My iPhone 7 Plus had served well for almost two years...

    For Sale What's a Stratus 2 worth?

I've carried my Stratus 2 for several years (right after they came out...can't remember when.) Use it at least once every week or so during thunderstorm season. It's in excellent condition and battery lasts longer than any of my flight days, either general aviation or 121. I'm considering...

My student pilot and his Adderall prescription

I had a student start training a couple of weeks ago. Nice young man, recent college graduate. He was really pumped after the flight. In our debrief I walked him through the next steps, including, the medical. It was then he told me he'd heard he may have an issue with a prescription he got...

How to hand prop a Cirrus (A Satire)

Actually, he was a little too far ahead of the plane!!

Piper Cherokee 140 With High Engine Time. Worth The Buy?

Depends on how frequently it has flown. The Cherokee 140 I spend the most time teaching in is currently around 2,300 hours. I've put 1,000 of those on in the last six years and I'm not the only one teaching in it. So, regular use with regular oil changes and attentive upkeep can allow them to...

    How safe/unsafe is glider flying?

I've only NOT made it back to the airport of intended landing once. But I was really, really close!! Just landed on the edge of a nicely cultivated field....felt like landing on a plush carpet. Keep in mind most gliders touch down at speeds much slower than most singles. You can put them into...

Have I lost my mind? ;)

Never say never! I have a friend who was a flight attendant at my airline who decided she'd rather be up front and is in training as I type. It can be done. Liberty has an interesting approach and is worth checking out. They've partnered with small flight schools around the country where you...

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

Since I travel a lot, I often review the student's flight planning from afar and I approve it without being there. I have them text me a photo at each stop along the way to keep me apprised of their progress. Very seldom am I actually at the airport.

    Eliminating circling approaches... or not...

We're approved for them but require essentially VFR minimums to use them. A rarity, indeed.

One of my favorite places to visit. John Tune has always treated me well.

    G5 question

A friend just did that with his Cherokee 180 and had the vac system completely removed. It was a sweet upgrade.

When Will I Solo (asked many times I'm sure)

That's when it SHOULD be done. No need to wait. Definitely fly with another instructor there. Now, not every student is ready at 15 hours, but the majority will be. Time for another opinion.

Apple Watch 3 - First Impressions

I, too, had a hankering for one when they first came out, but held off getting one until version 3 with cellular came out. I decided it would be my reward for completing my upgrade to Captain. But even with that, I knew my wife might push back on spending that much on a gift for myself...

    ForeFlight's new Trip Assistant

There’s nothing in the $400 most of us need, which is why it’s optional. Why begrudge them offering things we don’t need to others who do? I can’t quite understand that mentality.

    ForeFlight's new Trip Assistant

Just to be clear, I have no relationship with ForeFlight other than being a satisfied customer for seven or so years now. I don't begrudge them trying to maximize their return on their development investment. All I'm saying is the $400 top of the line subscription is literally pennies for those...

    ForeFlight's new Trip Assistant

If that $100 is an issue I suspect you’re not their target market for that feature. Those spending $100K a month operating a corporate jet spend more on lavatory service every trip.
