Thinking of Purchasing High Hour First Aircraft

Bummer. Sorry to hear that; it sounded like a decent deal, even at cost + engine overhaul, at least depending on the avionics details. Something else will come along!

    Best Aviation museum

I haven't been to nearly as many as I should (or would like), but probably Air & Space at the Smithsonian is the best I've been to. And of course Pima, locally. :-) But really, best or not, just about any aviation museum anywhere is worth a visit, right? :)

    Another constant speed prop question

It's also the money lever (or knob). Where I put it can be 15gph, or 11.5... Honestly, I never take off full rich here either. The field elevation is 2600 or so, but DA is regularly over 5000 or more. On run-up, I set the mixture full rich and RPM to 2000, and as I bring the mixture down, I...

    Another fuel exhaustion

One of the first things I changed in my Cherokee after I bought it was add a JPI fuel flow meter. The next time I feel like spending lots of money I'll probably replace the fuel senders with Cies, but in the mean time moderately conservative planning seems to be doing the trick.

I figured out when Garmin Pilot crashes...

I keep GP on both my tablet and my phone (and the only reason I have a phone as large as I do is so that I can read the charts on it) but to be honest I don't usually have GP up and running on both together. Good reminder, I should probably do that. My ADSB receiver will only talk to one at a...

    OLEO STRUT SERVICING

I doubt it - I'll bet this one really is just crazy markup, mostly because they are usually working on King Air's and up, and for those guys a $35 line item gets ignored in an $11,000 invoice... :)

    OLEO STRUT SERVICING

Aero Experts (Ki Yoon, Johhny Hale, et al) working out of the Jet Center. I actually tend to split my maintenance between them and Tucson Aeroservice in Marana. I'm completely sure that I'm getting charged more than cost and more than I would pay if I did more of it myself, but since I still...

    Fuel pressure issues

Somewhat late reply here, sorry. Curious what you've seen since? If the engine never hesitates or stumbles, I'd probably tentatively say watch it and see. Check the fuel filter for obstructions maybe? Possibly the engine-driven pump is on its way to wearing out. I suspect this is unrelated to...

    OLEO STRUT SERVICING

Ok, so, one person said their similar job was 8 hours, and two people have said (essentially) 7 hours, WTF??? So -- I'm not going to do the work myself; I don't have the skills, the time, a good place to work, etc., etc. I have a full time job and if I want to look over my A&P's shoulder for...

    Would you?

If you're somewhat lucky, maybe. On the other hand, your landing might be survivable without being ideal. How well do you swim in the open ocean with a broken leg? How well do you sit under a tree in one place waiting for SAR with a broken leg? True. And so did Earhart! Oh, wait...

    OLEO STRUT SERVICING

To add, ruled out the top valve before doing this. Definitely check that first; if it's the problem, it's much easier and cheaper. Also, when you say low, how low is low? 2.5 inches lower than it was yesterday, or 2.5 inches showing (which is enough to be still okay if it's not changing rapidly)?

    OLEO STRUT SERVICING

Funny you should ask... just ran into this in the last couple weeks. Prices in Tucson AZ; your local mileage may vary. PA-28-235 but I doubt it's any different for yours.

PIREP: GA into Dulles (A C172 adventure)

I've been to Burbank a couple of times - it was pretty easy all in all. I've never been to Dulles, but I don't really think BUR is anywhere close to a similar experience. It should be no problem.

Do they teach correct patterns any more?

I was out today to do some overdue practice, and someone (clear foreign student) announced about 12 north for the right downwind for 12. Runway 12 has left traffic. I was about 8 miles out, setting up for the 45 for left downwind 12. I announce, and announce again a couple miles closer, and the...

    A20 headset, tighten mic boom?

Does anyone know if there is a way to tighten the mic boom on the Bose A20? Mine has gotten loose enough that it tends to fall out of position on its own -- annoying. Thanks!

Runs out of gas, family sues ATC

Well, that's its own story... refer back to luvflyin's post #78 in this thread.

Pilots lands on road, stops by red light, police officer knocks

I had that thought too, but then there are a lot of street lights to avoid, and then traffic to avoid... I think he can be forgiven for not greasing it on.

Runs out of gas, family sues ATC

If he switched fuel tanks he would have landed at his planned destination without incident. It also looks like he never actually declared an emergency. Why wouldn't you, even before the second engine quit? I really don't see anything here that ATC can reasonably be criticized for, I have to say.

Honestly, if I heard that on the radio... I'd get out of his way. :)

    IFR Navigation in WW2?

Lindbergh got across the ocean with basically a compass and a stopwatch. Not IFR, but certainly a very long stretch with no navigational reference points. Which is not to say that this is easy, by any means. We have it easy now by comparison, but I'll take it any day.
