    New to me bird

I felt like I was learning all over again! It had been about 10 years since I’d even started a piston powered airplane, I told my CFI to walk me through the start up, he kinda laughed, he finally figured out I was serious. It took 4-5 hours to get comfortable that time. This time was pretty...

    Flying Magazine article

We traded my dad’s original 182 to Van Bortel for a 310 in 1992. We wanted to keep our N number, so they applied a number similar to the ones Cessna used in 73. The guys that bought it lived in Texas and one day the landed at a small airport and they were suddenly surrounded by DEA agents with...

    172 panel for ifr?

That panel would be ok ifr, I’d like the 530 better if it was WAAS. I’d leave adf until you do panel work.

    How did you find aviation?

My dad starting taking flying lessons in 1972, I was 8 at the time. After about 20 hours, he ordered a new 182, the first N747JB. He flew with his instructor to Wichita to finish his PPL. He kept it on a little grass strip that belonged to one of his friends. I loved flying in and out if that...

    Kissimmee or Orlando exec

I’ve been to Kissimmee a fair few times, last time there were 3-4 FBO’s. One is kind of an outlier, I can’t remember the name, not plush, but bathrooms worked and fuel was cheap!

    New to me bird

I took delivery of a 414 today, 414MM, it’s got low time Ram 335 hp engines, GTN 530/430 WAAS and flies like a dream! Put about 2 hours on her, 3 approaches and 4 landings, it’s like riding a bike!

No Ammeter Reading - Would You Scrub?

We heard a zing in the headsets and I figured out it was the belt. But, I was 23 year old pilot that was still semi-invincible! :D

No Ammeter Reading - Would You Scrub?

If we fly long enough, failures will happen and odds are a few of them will be away from home base. I slung an alternator belt on our 182 climbing out of Hattiesburg MS, heading to FTY. Took a minute to sort out exactly what had happened, weather was severe clear and I was VFR. I shut off the...

Reminder - watch out for deer on landings at night!

Cool video! I have seen lots of wildlife at FTY, it’s in an industrial area (slum) but borders the Chattahoochee river, we saw a big buck a couple years ago!

    Buying plane with damage history

I’d much prefer to buy a well maintained airplane in great condition with old damage history, than one with sketchy maintenance and no “known” damage history. My 182 had a wing replaced in 1979, it seems to be holding together pretty good so far. You need to take damage history into account, but...

Shopping for next plane, help wanted

I’m a big guy and like 182’s, our Q model trues at 133-140, I flight plan for 130. Restart 182’s are a bit heavier than prior models. A non-turbo 210 would give you room and a significant speed increase over the 172. They are all high right now!!

    LLC questions

The plane won’t be leaving the state, plane is local and maintained for 25+ years at the shop that I use. But, I agree, I might wait a year or so to remove it, or I could always leave it in the LLC.

    LLC questions

Thanks for the replies, I am aware that buying an airplane with an LLC I would have to pay sales tax, been down that road! I’m looking at buying the existing LLC, that is owned by a local guy. I have had previous planes in an LLC, but I don’t see the advantage of doing it paying the fees...

    LLC questions

First, I will talk to my attorney and CPA this week. But, I'm curious if anyone has experience buying the LLC that owns the airplane as it's sole asset? I can buy the LLC and save $14,000 in state sales tax, which covers over half of the avionics upgrade. Other than getting hold harmless...

Can you learn in any plane?

I learned in a 182, so did my father and my son. That will give you plenty of room and enough speed and payload to go on trips after you get your PPL. Good instrument platform as well. Get your PPL and IR, then multi IR and you'll be legal in smaller twin turbo props, not smart or insurable, but...

    Garmin Databases

I was flying the plane to the paint shop with the buyer! I wasn’t going to pay $900 for a 1:30 trip. :D
