    PAR approeach

The Rhino can take the gear E28 at 170 knots. If I recall correctly the Goshawk was 163? Could be a player during no flap landings in either platform.

has anyone heard of a MOA collision?

That's a dangerous assumption. Many MOA's exist for training purposes for airplanes with no radar. (T-6, T-34, T-45, T-38, T-1) In addition, most military airplanes (especially tactical jets) don't have any type of TCAS or traffic avoidance like civilian airplanes do. Given an air to...

    ForeFlight Standard or Pro?

Go standard, if at all. Foreflight is a great tool once you know how to use a paper chart.

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

This would have been my answer as well.

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

True, 7nm viz would seem to be fine, but when you start talking about circling at mins it's a whole different animal.

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

The video you posted is in bright, sunny, day VMC. Doesn't mean anything regarding the wisdom of circling to that Runway.

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

True, but the aircraft flight manual isn't written specifically for high mountain ops...otherwise the Saudis flying them as private jets would be abiding by pointless limitations...

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

What is the reason for limits like that? Max tire speed is about the only thing I can think of? Other than that stopping distance would the limiting factor. Most TW limitations I'm familiar with are for engine start.

    Challenger Crash in Aspen

Circle to land with any obstructions is a spectacular way to F it away and die in a jet. Personally if I had gone missed 3 times and my options were land with a 30 knot tailwind, circle to land IVO mountainous terrain, or divert...I'd go somewhere else. Ain't worth dyin' fer...

Putting flaps in during a turn

Yes, it's spoken to, but apparently our jet flies much better in that configuration than the Hornet does/did. Still considered a pretty big deal as far as FCS failures though.

Putting flaps in during a turn

For what it's worth: I use flaps in a turn if I need them. In the military overhead break style traffic pattern, the flaps and landing gear are lowered as soon as the airplane decelerates through 250 knots and is below 2G load factor. That usually occurs around a 60 degree angle of bank and...

    Upchit as 3rd class medical

Good gouge on the medical. I'll stick to a 3rd class then.

    Upchit as 3rd class medical

Thanks for the input guys. I'll bring the CFR with me and hope it isn't an insurance requirement. Flight physicals for pilots and NFO's are the same except for eyesight requirements. I know some WSO's who fly civil aircraft with up chits, not 100% sure of the legality though. I'll...

    Calling TRACON for flight planning

You could try going on fltplan.com and see what routes folks have been cleared for in the past. That will give you an idea of preferred routing.

    Upchit as 3rd class medical

A local FBO is trying to deny me the ability to fly because I use a Navy Medical Clearance (upchit) vice a 3rd class medical. Is there anything in the FARs that I could show them to clear this up? They say it's an issue because they're a Part 121 school? Insurance perhaps? This adds...

A question about popularity of 2-place monoplane form factor

Which Diamond made useless by not certifying for IFR. I still think a DA20 would be my ideal personal airplane if I could shoot an approach through a thin layer to get home...

    Becoming a Pilot

Just like any other job, competition exists to get selected. However, you'll compete to get an airline or Part 135 job as well. The trade-off is that the things that will make you competitive for a military aviation contract (good grades, college degree, leadership experience) will also make...

    Becoming a Pilot

Quincy, Have you considered military aviation? If the interest is there, you can get your flight training paid for and fly some of the hottest machines out there. It isn't as carefree as flying purely for recreation, but it is very rewarding. Assuming you are in good health and...

    Hypothetical - Flap failure

Find a new CFI. He doesn't know what as symmetric flap deployment will do to an airplane?? One of the airplanes I've flown had a procedure; Uncommanded roll/yaw - Return flap/slat lever to previous setting

US Navy training with Beech T-34 Mentor (Part 2)

The T-34, SF260 and other such aircraft are more suited to gentlemanly aerobatics. I'd leave snap rolls and such to Extras, Edge, and MX2 type airplanes
