"Overhead to the initial", say what?

I think we agree here. The IP's at Skywarrior wearing flight suits in Cessna 172's - douchey. Using .mil comm on CTAF for no reason, agreed - douchey. But calling the "initial for the overhead" is standard aviation comm (in as far as it is in the FAR/AIM. I've often requested the overhead...

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

Wow, all the haters need to calm down. I use the overhead regularly at civilian fields, mainly because the airplanes I’m flying won’t make the field during an engine failure if I follow the idiot flying a 747-sized pattern in his [insert light GA aircraft here]. The benefit to the overhead, in...

250 Knots IAS below 10,000 feet - is it adhered to?

Ah, got me, Evil! I shouldn’t have over-generalized.

250 Knots IAS below 10,000 feet - is it adhered to?

In the military jets, we will climb and descend at 300kts below 10k for controllability reasons. The airplane flies fine at 250, but if you have to maneuver hard to avoid traffic it just tends to skid around below 300 as opposed to actually turning. Once above 10k we accelerate to 350kts...

    "Bluebonnet Belle" crash in Burnet,Tx

As you get into heavier airplanes, and airplanes that accelerate quite fast (turbines) an abort on the runway suddenly becomes a pretty sporty affair. People have burned jets to the ground when brakes caught fire, or have gone off the side of the runway when tires blew etc... In the Hornet...

Popularity (or lack thereof) of Sport Planes

Why are so few pilots interested in aircraft that are aerobatic, cross country machines? I come to that conclusion based on the lack of popularity of these machines on the market compared to “spam cans” that seat 2-4 people (in reality, not how many chairs are installed) and fly straight and...

Why Amend a Route with a Victor Airway vs Direct?

I was a VFA-106 RAG student in Oceana, but I did my fleet tour in Lemoore. Heading to Chinese Lake shortly. More SoCal flying in my future! Bought an RV-8 as well!

Why Amend a Route with a Victor Airway vs Direct?

Be nice to the ole girl! But yes, it is the slowest fighter in the world... :-) Haha, we call it the Rhino because “Hornet Ball” and “Super Hornet Ball” can sound similar behind the ship on scratchy radios, and if the two jets get confused the arresting gear could be set for a landing weight...

Why Amend a Route with a Victor Airway vs Direct?

Hey guys, Flew my first IFR trip in a civilian, steam gauge airplane today, and it was a blast. Good to knock the rust off the instrument skills. I had a question though. My filed route included LHS SLI KSNA. 20nm prior to LHS VOR ATC amended my route to LHS V459 SLI KSNA. For the life of...

A different kind of skyhawk for sale

Evil, It just hit me; we met at NWESP in Tyndall a few years ago. Didn’t put 2 and 2 together until just now. I got to fight Drag in a Rhino... Still supremely jealous of all the dudes who got to fly scooters...that thing looks like a hoot!

The why did they do that, thread, Cirrus edition

Maybe not spring cartridges per say, but the elevator was spring loaded to the full down position and the ailerons were spring loaded to neutral. If you let go of the stick the controls returned to centered ailerons and full nose down. F/A-18 has a spring centering stick as well, but of course...

The why did they do that, thread, Cirrus edition

So, I've got a whopping 1.5 hours in a cirrus; here are some of my thoughts. They're worth what you paid for them. 1.) I've flown a few high performance airplanes that have spring centered controls (T-6B Texan II is the most directly comparable to a GA airplane). Never found that the springs...

    T-34B Questions

Hey all, Been doing some reading online (dated 1999) that said there was motion to get T-34B's certified in the Aerobatic category vice the Utility category, bringing them to the same status as the T-34A, which for all intents and purposes is the same aircraft, minus some fuel system...

So I bought into a plane

Did a lot of flying in those Orange and White jets into KMEI...that picture makes me miss it a little bit; also the free hot dogs and popcorn...not to mention the waffles!

Anyone seen anything on a Pacific Ocean rescue?

Unfortunately this was a buddy of mine. Suicide isn't likely. I flew that plane a few months ago too...

    Questions for professional pilots.

Have you considered a commissioning program (is there an equivalent to STA21 in the Marines?) and military flight training? Your time in service would count towards retirement, and you could transition to civilian flying afterwards. Plus the flight training is free.

    Bay Tour Advice

Good to know. I'm instrument rated and current, but the T-34 is not instrument equipped, so I'll plan on making the trip nonstop.

    Bay Tour Advice

It'll be my first time up that area. Looking at the chart, I was thinking of coming up from NLC to HAF, then up the western side of the bay, over Alcatraz, then back over the Bay Bridge, and RTB the way I came. That should hit the highlights it seems.

    Bay Tour Advice

Awesome. Anything worth looking at over on the eastern side of the bay, or is up and down 101 the thing most folks do?
