    Mooney gone?

I sat in the Mooney fuselage they had at Oshkosh (2019) and realized why they went under. I’m 6’2”, and with the pilot seat adjusted for my height, there was no leg room for the seat behind me. Not very little, none. The seat back was butt up against the rear seat. I don’t see how you can be...

What puts chips on the face of a propeller?

    Definitely a problem then! Yikes!

What puts chips on the face of a propeller?

I’m confused. Assuming this was a 4-cyl airplane, what’s the problem? 8.0 GPH fuel burn at cruise (sometimes lower), 1.0 gal taxiing to the pump / accuracy of the fuel gauge / how far up the filler neck do you go...where I’m going with this is, he could have had his required 30 minute reserve...

Tail wheel Pilots: 3 point or wheel landings?

That WAS a nice 3-pointer! Probably better than I could do consistently. I will submit though, that being on grass a little of the dartiness I was talking about is removed. But, point taken.

Tail wheel Pilots: 3 point or wheel landings?

Nobody has mentioned this yet, but a 3-point landing assumes the wing is near its critical AoA when on the ground in a 3-point attitude. My Vans RV-8 doesn’t have enough AoA on the ground to stall the wing, so a full stall landing hits tailwheel first with the likelihood of eventually causing...

    Too Many Presidential TFR's

I’ve had luck flying through some of those TFR’s by calling ATC ahead of time and coordinating. Not sure if that’s standard or not?

    CO losses job over flyover

    Chino, CA FBO

Just an FYI; Flying Tigers sued the Planes of Fame air museum last year. If you support the flying warbirds, probably don’t patronize them with your gas purchase. It’s a shame, because I used to enjoy going there before I saw the lawsuit. There’s other cheap fuel at CNO to he had.

    Last Navy Hornet

I’d much prefer a Rhino for CAS. More gas, more ordnance, better displays (same lousy FLIR), and some avionics improvements. The best combination IMHO would be a F with a FAC/A qualified WSO in the backseat. Then an E, then a C/A+. Caveat all this with the fact that most people would prefer...

250 Knots IAS below 10,000 feet - is it adhered to?

The funny thing is that as I progressed through training to my fleet aircraft, each one got less and less sophisticated from a navigation perspective. T-6B - Full glass cockpit, EICAS, FMS, RNAV, ILS, VOR/DME T-45C - TACAN, ILS F/A-18 - TACAN only (RNAV now...still no ILS)

250 Knots IAS below 10,000 feet - is it adhered to?

One thing that has always bothered me a bit is that when I put in my flight plan, and file with a TACAN/Mode C only equipment code, I still get slammed with GPS fixes. We got RNAV capability and can now file /W a few years ago, which has greatly eased IFR operations, but why bother with an...

    Military jet crashes into warehouse

Min fuel in the Rhino is 2.3k. I’ve landed with 1.7k but it was fairly uncomfortable. I think the numbers are based around boat ops where fuel is more critical than it is ashore, given that the runway can go foul at any time.

    Military jet crashes into warehouse

Holy crap! Your feed tanks only hold 2600?! Feed tank fuel is about 5k in a Rhino! Same dump idea though, everything except feed tanks can be dumped assuming normal external transfer. Seems McD created very similar machines in the Eagle and Hornet.

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

Yep, doing exercises with the AF highlights this...usually takes us Navy types a few days to learn the new terminology for everything

    What sucks about your airplane?

Love most things about my RV-8... Wish the gear was a bit more beefy; they tend to be the weak point if the airplane is ever ground looped. The fuselage gear towers get ripped out of the fuselage. Also, the gear towers force the rudder pedals to be close together.

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

I’m late back to the party, but I think the points were; 1. Thousands of overhead breaks have been safely executed without positive ATC/Radio comm, and in fact that is the standard method of doing business in the Navy. Find your interval by looking out the window and break to follow them...

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

In section I don’t care; -2 can cross under as they depart. In division, a heads up would be nice, although, I probably wouldn’t want to be doing too much reshuffling in IMC. Last time I had to bring a division down IMC, we split into 2 sections and did section approaches to avoid clobbering...

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

Just like every other answer in aviation...it depends. Once I switch to CTAF the first task is to listen and figure out what’s going on at the field. If the pattern is chock full of 4+ airplanes it’s probably easier to just sequence in with the conga line and accept the pattern everyone else...

"Overhead to the initial", say what?

Yes, it takes the airplane from overhead the field at 140kts, to abeam the numbers at gear speed, then a quick 180 to land power off. Inside the window to glide to the field the entire time. In an airplane with a better glide ratio, you should be able to make the field from any point in your...
