    STOL

Good job! They were amazing demos! The original test bed for the Helio technology was a Piper PA15 Vagabond (essentially a side-by-side clipped-wing Cub), which was modified into exp. with drooping ailerons and leading edge slots. Have a pic of it somewhere in my library. Your '<-oldie'...

    STOL

Test question for the oldies among us.... What organization put on an amazing exhibit of the Helio @ OSH in the early days? Bonus points... Modifications to what certified a/c type lead directly to the Helio? No Googling allowed! Jim

    150 knots for $150k

Just read thru this whole thread...it's a snowy Sunday morning. A couple notes ref the 182RG, based on several years of current ownership... The fuel flow quoted in OP's chart matches our real-world numbers... 12g or so @ 150k...not too shabby on 235hp. Only mod is a 3-blade Black Mac. 182rg...

Confession - Never had real maple syrup...

Did someone say maple syrup? Ohio produced 65K gallons last year.... We get ours from a local youth camp who produce it just South of us. It's pretty much replaced sugar for us. Jim

    Tight VNC: Safe? Malware?

Thanks guys! Jason, some how I missed your reply last month. Actually, all I really want to do is view the RTSP camera streams from away from the home network without it running thru Wyze, Amazon storage and lord knows who else. Open to ideas... Thanks! Jim

    Weaver, or isosceles?

In my most realistic self-defense situation I'm not even wearing underwear, let alone a vest....middle-of-the-night break-in. :-) Hopefully, most any other situation can be managed to the point that no decision needs to be made. Get to cover is always plan A. Jim

So tell me about VPNs and phones

What he ^^^^ said.... The DSR250 has OpenVPN options to run as a client, server, or client-server. Most home routers won't have the options. Jim

So tell me about VPNs and phones

We have ProtonVPN. Clients for Win, Linux, ios, and android. If your router will do it, you can run it on your router and protect everything on your LAN. They have options to keep your traffic inside the USA or route it outside/ through a specific country. Paid plan is $5 a month for 5...

A-65 lost prime to oil gauge

Used to have that problem on a Vagabond if it sat for awhile. For some reason, if we'd lift the tail to head level, set it back down and then start, we'd get oil pressure every time. YMMV, of course. Jim

Rockford IL. Experimental - engine quits on takeoff?

When we used to stop in there in the 80's the whole place was covered with tied-down aircraft! Things have changed! Auburn HS loomed large in the windshield taking off to the South (toward the road). I seem to remember it was somewhat uphill that direction, also. Glad no one was hurt! Jim

Have You Experienced An Engine Failure?

I've had 2 in 49 years of flying....both pretty much self-inflicted, in new-to-me aircraft. First one was in a Warrior. Bought it sitting on a ramp, neglected. Logs looked good, cursory inspection OK...dumb kid (me) in charge, no pre-buy. Took it home to NW IL, cleaned it up, and first long...

    Tight VNC: Safe? Malware?

Woohoo....old thread, but.... I've got Wyze cams at the house running RTSP to iSpy on a Win10 computer, recording 24/7 (also the Wyze app for alerts). Would like to access that computer remotely while away from the house via my iPad. Computer geeks....is TightVMC what I want to accomplish...

Lookin' Out My Back Door....EMS down at KBJJ

Metro Life Flight...crew of four, all uninjured. Didn't ask who it was in the Citation when I was over there, but they've started taking it apart Jim

Lookin' Out My Back Door....EMS down at KBJJ

We live on a hill across the runway from the FBO @ KBJJ. Sitting on the back porch yesterday afternoon, paying almost no attention as the EMS guys departed for a run. Heard a strange noise and looked up in time to see a huge cloud of dust. The guys had started to depart over a construction...

How often is a propeller rebuild necessary?

There are both TIS and calendar time recommendations for each prop model. I vote for treating them like the overhaul recommendations on engines...but that's just me :-) Shout out for Tiffin Air, in Tiffin, Ohio... When we bought the R182, the two-bladed prop hadn't been touched for a l-o-n-g...

    Desktop Simulator Recommendations

Don't have sources who have gotten an LoA approved, but both Austin and the FAA guy I talked to thought it was doable. Just mass quantities of paperwork. I didn't pursue it basically because I've got and airplane and sleep with my CFI every night...don't tell my wife. Oh, wait, it's ok...

    Desktop Simulator Recommendations

Sims tend to build on themselves. Started out with a Commodore 64. Here's a friend at the current incarnation. XPlane, Redbird controls, 4k tv's. the smaller monitor is a touchscreen, on which the GTN keystrokes are identical to the r/w airplane. Homebuilt switch/autopilot panel. ipad...
