School me on the Garmin GDL-39

We have one in the Citabria....have never had a problem with it. Ditto the GDL50 in the 182....both sit on the glare shields. Jim

    Win10 Linux Dual Boot - Screw-up

Heck....you've got your data, so life is relatively good! Had a thought. There's a place on the MS site where you can download an .iso of a full copy of Win10. You could burn that to a CD and try a re-install with the option to keep your settings. Not sure if it will be happy with your...

    Win10 Linux Dual Boot - Screw-up

You could always just dedicate the internal hard drive to Windows, and boot Linux off an external USB drive. If you have USB3.0 ports, and use an external SSD, it might actually boot faster than your internal HD. Are you really running a 10-year-old PC? :) ....or just the dual-boot strategy...

    Win10 Linux Dual Boot - Screw-up

We all know just enough to be dangerous...sadly. I feel your pain...I do this sort of thing to myself regularly. Do I understand correctly that the Win 10 'recovery USB'....won't? Depending on your expertise, you could boot to a Linux (Mint is easy) USB stick, which would let you see the...

    Home Flight Simulators—What’s Your Setup?

X-Plane.... https://www.x-plane.com/kb/linux-installation-walkthrough/ The short course....load your OS...I've used Ubuntu or Mint. Download the installer from the x-plane site. Run that installer and you' ll end up with a fully-functional copy of X-Plane 11, limited only by 10 minutes of...

    …When to Hang It Up!

Easy decision tree here. My (younger) wife gave me a BFR in my Citabria on our first date. If she won't do it any more....it's time :-) Jim

    Home Flight Simulators—What’s Your Setup?

Yup, two of my three linked sim boxes are running on Linux Mint...an Ubuntu derivitive. The only reason the third one isn''t is the RXP GTN add-on. It requires Garmin Trainer in the background, which is strctly Winders. Linux is more efficient, IMHO.

    Home Flight Simulators—What’s Your Setup?

I've powered my (admittedly minimalist) switch panel from an Arduino. I was just looking for the switches that make real-world sense...DG, HSI, autopilot, etc. Running the GTNs on a touchscreen or ipad saves a lot of hassle button-wise. Didn't care to spend the time soldering more. One of...

    Navigating by Pilotage

Related remembrance.... Back in the 70's, I had a grass strip with arguably one of the best navaids ever. Base leg to 36 was over the pool behind Lock and Dam 13 on the Mississippi River...an 8 mile across pool of water. General procedure for returning home was 1) grab about the right heading...

Bored?..Let's Talk Inside Home Air Quality

Well THAT certainly took longer than I expected :) I've done a LOT of reading on that subject, Rich. The perception of risk all boils down to who you believe, I guess. Figures don't lie, but liars figure :) We have a radon detector in the house, and as lifetime non-smokers, we're both...

Bored?..Let's Talk Inside Home Air Quality

Great information, Gary!...thank you! Honeywell was the vendor for our heat pump, and they actually make an electronic air cleaner that looks to be a slide-in replacement for our filter (with comparable back pressure). Comes with it's own pre-filter for $550-ish. Sounds like that may be just...

Bored?..Let's Talk Inside Home Air Quality

We monitor constantly, and keep the humidity level between 45 and 50 percent (using the dehumidifier, if not the HRV). So far, things have been ok. Thanks! Jim

Tall pilot roll call (6'5"+), advice for a beginner

6'-4" and 6'-0" co-pilots. Before we got our R182 we sat in most of the GA aircraft, and it fit us best. We've had it to both coasts and FL from Ohio, comfortably. I'm the 6'-4", with a 33" inseam, and she banished me to the back seat one day. It was also quite pleasant, actually. Jim PS-...
