Fixed Leg Options for 3-4 people 135 or more kts

Gotya. Well depending on how often the "occasion" is, I'd either get the RV and rent for the kids, or just live with 120-130kts and the standard options. Which will satisfy your mission the greater percentage of the time?

Do you use flight following? if so how and when do you choose to use it?

Good video, thanks for sharing. I'm now subscribed. With regards to FF, I have only ever been happy to have them, and there were times that I got into suboptimal situations that could have been avoided with it. So yeah, it has some minor annoyances, but the benefits (in my mind) clearly...

Fixed Leg Options for 3-4 people 135 or more kts

As above, I think the difference of 20nm in 2 hours is pretty negligible. However, you said it is mostly for travel with your wife. If that is the case, it seems like an RV-7/9 would be perfect for the mission. The speed difference would be substantial over a 172/Cherokee, and they can easily...

Amen. The least expensive upgrade or "speed mod" tends to be long range tanks.

Weak transmit - radio problem? Bad ANR batteries?

I was unable to clearly communicate with approach today. I was less than 20 miles from the station at about 6500 feet. They could hear my initial call, but could not clearly hear my request for FF that followed. This is not the first time this has happened. It seems like at 10+ miles out...

Fixed Leg Options for 3-4 people 135 or more kts

The "135 knots" requirement seems oddly specific to me. It would seem the the OP can have everything he wants and have a lot of options if he was willing to accept the 120-130 knot range. In the total time of a trip (to/from airport, preflight, fueling, etc) this would result in an almost...

    First Time Airplane Buyer....maybe

My former partner didn't fly for the first several years of our partnership. Didn't even have a license. Just really liked being able to say he owned his own airplane :)

    First Time Airplane Buyer....maybe

This is the way to go. You can get a cream puff 150/152 for $30k, learn a ton about ownership, build hours at 5 gal/hr, get an instrument rating, and upgrade when you are (financially) ready. I'm biased because I've owned 2 150's and I think they're awesome airplanes. Super simple, reliable...

That's awesome - good for you. You didn't just talk about it, you did it!

6Y3 - North Fox Island: tell me everything!

This looks so awesome, it's definitely going on my aviation bucket list. So far my only island destination has been Put-in-bay which I found a bit disappointing. In my reading it says there are no trails, yet the photos look like a trail is pictured - is there any sort of trail on the island?

Training in my own aircraft: equipment question

I was under the impression waas GPS can substitute for a precision approach as well. I'd have to look up the regs.

    Who's actually got their CFI-S?

Interesting debate that this thread has devolved into. I think that there is some legitimacy to being concerned about less training. At a bare minimum, a CFI-S can have 150 hours vs the 300 or so for a regular CFI. Additionally, there is definitely some value in going through the training /...

Bought my first airplane. Evektor Sportstar

Beautiful airplane! I hope to one day own a modern LSA like this, I think they are a great deal and very capable performance.

    Who's actually got their CFI-S?

Hi Dale, no info but following your thread with interest. What would you hope to do with the certificate? I know the major downside is that any sport pilot training hours given by a CFI-S cannot be counted towards a private pilot license, which is really going to limit your potential clients...

Yet another which plane should I consider threat...

You may not like this, but I think it's pretty shortsighted to think of airplane purchase price in terms of monthly payments. The purchase price is the amount you are spending on it, and that's just the beginning. It may make you feel better to say it's "only" $400 per month or $700 per month...

    New to this site

Welcome. Would love to see some pics of the plane! I considered a tomahawk as well - they are good looking vintage 2 seaters. They are just so much harder to come by that 150's though, so I ended up going that route.
