Crankshaft failure in flight, lost propeller, no injuries

This happened in 2011 to a 172 at night between Atmautluak and Bethel as well. The pilot landed it on a frozen lake, someone found the prop on the tundra after the thaw. They sent it out for NDT, found that it was good as new, and stuck it back on the plane.

The greatest invention in general aviation

I worked for a company that had a pilot spill a large coffee on the center pedestal of a learjet taxiing out for departure. The cockpit very quickly filled up with smoke, and they ended up evacuating the aircraft. I never heard what the actual $$$ in damage was, but it was somewhere in the 6...

    Strength of GA?

What percentage of people who make $90,000/yr are buying new luxury SUVs? A super cub costs $100,000+, I guess partially that’s to blame on all the “backcountry cowboy” types, but that’s not an attainable goal to the vast majority of people. Even a clapped out 150 is $30k these days. Most are...

    Strength of GA?

I think GA as something that is attainable for the “middle class” will continue to wane. I just don’t think there are people with enough disposable income, or people that are willing to substantially change their lifestyles, for it to continue as it has in the past. The median household income...

    Best Puke Bag

I used to fly a lady fairly regularly that would show up to every flight with her own very large scented garbage bag. She had terrible motion sickness and every time she would get on a plane she would get sick. I never smelled the puke, just the scented bag, which I figured would prevent the...

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

For only $10,000,000 taxpayer dollars a day you can help a starving conglomerate of billion dollar companies afford to build a new racetrack and see exactly $0 return on your investment.

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

In the beaver there is a fuel pressure light and when it turns on you have 5 seconds to switch tanks and wobble wobble wobble or you definitely aren’t getting a tip from your fishing clients.

Be sure to store your Airbus in a cool, dark place

How hot do those lights get to cause that kind of damage? I mean these things are flown out of some of the hottest places on earth and are fine.

    Hilariously wasteful charter flight

Fun fact: Alaska Wales is one of the very few places you can see Russia from the ground. Not from the ground obviously, but Wales is right past the little hill on the shoreline. Big/little Diomede islands can be seen past that, and in the haze on the far shoreline to the right of the islands...

    Van’s Aircraft Facing Challenges

I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to say that Vans has done more for General Aviation over the last 30 years than any other single entity.

    Van’s Aircraft Facing Challenges

I was a big Maui Jim fan until they were acquired by Kering. Now I just have my old Maui Jims and all future sunglasses purchases will be from Flying Eyes. Now I just need to convince Flying Eyes to start making Ski goggles.
