    Single Pilot "Emergencies"

It’s not the manufacturers who necessarily want single-pilot airliners. They just build what the airlines pay them to build. This ad should replace “planemakers” with “airline management” or “uninformed stockholders who can’t see the big picture”.

Insurance Company Throws A Logical Twist

There are plenty of things that are disqualifying for a Class 3 or higher but really have no effect on flight safety. Alcohol violations from years ago where no one was hurt, the great apnea bugaboo, situational depression. A couple airline pilots, wiped out from their company’s work schedule...

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

Insisting on “niner” isn’t really necessary 99% of the time. They came up with “niner” to distinguish the number nine from the German word “nein” (no) because it’s an international phonetic alphabet. For the vast majority of our flying inside the US, not much chance that there’s going to be a...

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

Depends on the controller. I’ve heard controllers answer calls like that just as if they’d been by the book, and have heard them respond with “aircraft calling, say again your callsign”, and with slowly and deliberately answering with the “proper” callsign. And then there is the controller who...

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

Doesn’t bother me at all. Is he telling me where he is and where he’s going to be? If so, then good enough. I wouldn’t call them out over the air and start being the radio police.

    CFI practical test stumper question

Good opportunity for the candidate to guide the DPE like he would a student through looking it up in the FAR, helping him understand how the regs are organized and where to find particular topics. Part of teaching is training students to help themselves.

California is a governor's signature away from banning 100LL in 2031

It’s not an FAA issue. G100UL and UL94 are approved. The FAA can’t tell FBOs that they have to sell it, or what the price has to be.

California is a governor's signature away from banning 100LL in 2031

I don’t know what else we as pilots can do beyond requesting unleaded to be sold by the FBOs we do business with. From the discussions here and elsewhere about G100UL and UL94, it’s an executive-level issue. We can make our voice heard, but unless nearly every pilot who flies a gasoline burner...

California is a governor's signature away from banning 100LL in 2031

It’s a problem if unleaded avgas is not as available as 100LL. With this law, they’re assuming that an unleaded product is going to reach universal distribution by then. At the pace that the aviation and petroleum industries are moving on this, it might not happen by then.

Looking for a great airframe to mount Rotax 9 series

The whole package - engine, prop, accessories, engine mount, cowling and other miscellaneous will be pushing $75K from what I saw, maybe more.

Looking for a great airframe to mount Rotax 9 series

Only the RV-12, which is their LSA. Lockwood has developed a kit to put a 915 in an RV-9 (side-by-side, longer wings than the -7, non-aerobatic). With the 915 having a turbo, they’re saying it puts out max continuous power (75%) up to 19,000 feet. It will easily exceed Vne (200 KTAS - Vne for...

Powerpoint tips: - Only put the bullet points on a slide. Fill in the details by speaking or with demonstration. Powerpoint is a teaching aid or prop, and is great for reinforcing the main points. It’s not the teacher. - Vary the background and font. Don’t let every slide look the same. - Learn...

do you swipe to type? (NA numbnutz)

I swipe pretty much always on the iPhone, and proofread before sending or posting. One thing about autocorrect that really irks me is the automatic censoring of swear words. I read once that it’s intended to prevent people from inadvertently sending things that could get them in trouble. I say...

Rio Linda L36 (not Rio Vista) - PIREP

With the floor at 1600 and the terrain being almost at sea level, stay at 1000 and it’ll be a piece of cake. It actually might be easier to not go on flight following.

2 Delta workers killed at ATL after tire explosion 8/27/24

On a motorcycle ride through Ventura, we’re stopped at a red light next to a gas station. And suddenly there is a BOOM! to our right. Look at the gas station, and we see two officers on bicycle patrol. One has an air hose in his hand, a blown-up tire and a bewildered look on his face. The other...
