    Piper Cherokee 180

Since it’s for display only and using certified hardware won’t matter, I’d find the specification for the bolt and get the right size from the hardware store.

"Make you cockerel crow" and other obsolete aviations terms

I’m assuming - as a civilian - that enlisted and NCOs would be more comfortable with their own clubs so they can do their thing, and they can talk all the smack they want about the officers. Yay or nay on that?

Insurance Company Throws A Logical Twist

Why shorten it? Don’t undo all the effort that went into us getting this. Screw the insurance companies.

I'm having way too much fun putting together my CFI notebook...complete with original illustrations.

Start simple and get more complex if it’s needed and the student has demonstrated the ability to understand and use it.

Hot starts and engine shut downs

A friend was perennially having trouble with hot starts in his Lance (IO-540) until he learned same procedure. Every hot start went smoothly and it fired up right away.

I'm having way too much fun putting together my CFI notebook...complete with original illustrations.

Breaking it down Barney-style is so often better than going Ph.D on them. Tell them just what they need to know, not everything you know.

    Pan Pan

I see pan-pan as “heads up, guys, I’m working an issue that could get worse”. Emergency is “I need your help right now - let’s get the other stuff on the back burner because the Creek just rose.” Declaring can get direct routing, help with vectors to the nearest field, get emergency services...

That phrase was first used in the mid 19th century, and continued in use before the world wars.

NA - Hey Aviation Forum, How do I find a leak in a pool pipe?

Good luck! I’m having the same problem. I think that bowl with the clear cover on the pump is called a skimmer pot. Ours only fills 2/3 at best. We had a leak - 1/4 to 1/2” a day in the pool that turned out to be under the main drain. The pool repair guy fixed it, and also replaced the seal on...

    Unusual attitude indicator

Not the airplane, the attitude indicator itself. I came across an early 60s Cessna with this oddball. The owner doesn’t have any info on it without digging through 60-some years of logs. Any ideas about where it came from?

Why has Vashon sold so few Rangers, and will MOSAIC turn that around?

Burping the oil adds maybe 20 seconds and is nearly effortless. A small price to pay for cheaper gas, not burning oil, 100 hour oil changes, and a much lighter engine.

Best way to create and use custom checklists (electronic vs paper)?

Mnemonics don’t work that well for me. Example, GUMP - currently, I’m flying an Ercoupe. If the engine is running, then the gas is on. Fixed gear, have yet to fly above 2000 MSL (in fact, in the 20+ years the plane has been at our airpark, I may well be the first to take it above 1200), fixed...

JURY CONVICTS PILOT OF LYING ON FAA MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

He is a POS who deserves to be grounded for life, but what does a theft conviction have to do with being medically fit to fly?

Best way to create and use custom checklists (electronic vs paper)?

I use Word and follow the same format for whatever plane I’m flying. The checklist has mostly just the killer items - things that if not done can bend metal or cause a dead battery or fouled plugs and such. It’s also set up to complete as many tasks as possible before taxiing, to reduce pilot...

    Can't clear old bank loan

Depends on the plane. If it’s a good deal to begin with and adding a couple grand to the price will still make it palatable, sure, go through with it.

Allowing CFI to fly my plane

Not all of them do. It’s been a few years, but when I first moved to Florida and was in between planes, I was going to rent 172s from a large flight school/FBO near us. Got an aircraft checkout, and then when I asked to get on the schedule to rent it for a personal flight there was an issue...

Allowing CFI to fly my plane

Add a requirement to the terms of use that a 6 pack or greater quantity of beer appears in the hangar following every flight. Good beer (pro tip - if it’s being pitched on commercials during football games, it’s not good beer), preferably cold. It’s not compensation. It’s just another wondrous...
