What advice would you give someone for a CFI checkride?

Don’t try to BS your way through something you don’t know. Be upfront with your student/DPE (who will roleplay as a student) about your limitations and work with it. Also expect for your “student” to drag the lesson off on some tangent, and be able to keep him from going down a rabbit hole, and...

Governor signs ban on 100LL into law

We’re currently on a road trip in California. All the way here from Florida, gas wasn’t too bad. But here in CA it’s well over four bucks a gallon - about $1.30 more than at home. The gas stations out in the desert reslly gouge people - $6.69 for 87 in, I think it was Ludlow. And it’s not like...

    Planes and hurricanes

We’re in an airpark, so the hangars and homes are all 50-75 yards apart. That’s probably far enough, but hopefully we’ll not have to find out. At least the structures on each side of us are new enough and built like tanks.

Does anyone wear out their exercise equipment?

My bench is getting worn out. Some brand I’ve never heard of (LineX or XLine) from Costco 24 or 25 years ago, adjustable bench that goes from decline to flat to upright. It’s starting to get a bit wobbly, but being only 14 gauge steel and standard-grade Chinesium hardware I have gotten more than...

Social Flight: The NEW FAA Ruling That Could DEVASTATE GA

That’s it exactly. An A&P isn’t required for what Savvy does.

    Flying with low/flat strut

Why the rush to fly versus being patient and waiting for it to be repaired? You’ll miss what, two or three flights?

Nan Chang CJ-6A mid-air LA County

I got an intro to formation from our next-door neighbor, who has 4,000+ hours in F-16s, instructor pilot, etc. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of work, and it was immediately apparent what the hazards are. Definitely not an activity for someone who isn’t focused, serious, and willing to accept being...

    Planes and hurricanes

If we have to evacuate for a storm, the plane will stay and we’ll drive. Our hangar is only five years old, so it’s built to the current codes and rated for 150 MPH wind.

    narco avionics repair

It’s really frustrating to deal with companies who don’t take 21st century forms of payment.

    Aviation Etiquette

That’s good advice for anywhere. And even if he is the FBO lawn guy, it’s a good idea to treat him well, because he probably has better connections and more juice at that airport than any transient pilot does.

    Considering a RV-6A But.......

Keeping weight off the nosewheel is Aviation 101. If they passed their private checkride, they’re capable of landing an RV-A safely and competently every time. May as well also limit all planes to 30 knot stall speed, put 20 hours of fuel on board, and limit turns to 30 degrees bank.

    Self serve fuel pump etiquette

Someone recently referred to Barnstormers as “woke” because they deleted the seller’s phone numbers from the ads and you can only contact them via a link.

Do you turn around to inspect your run-up spot for leaks?

In the years I owned a Harley and the thousands I’ve gone on rides with and looked at up close, almost none of them built past the early to mid 80s leaked oil. Harleys built in this century are as oil-tight as anything else.

    Considering a RV-6A But.......

The nose strut isn’t the strongest, but almost all flipovers are caused by improper landing technique. Land at minimum speed (62 knots on final in an RV-8); 1.3 Vso on final, slow down crossing the fence, power to idle, flare and hold it off until the wheels settle onto the ground, hold full aft...

Please help me pick my second motorcycle

If you’re not completely set on a V twin, consider a Honda Goldwing Tour. I’ve had my current Goldwing since ‘21, and love it. It’s the third Goldwing I’ve had since I started riding in the 80s, and it’s the best version yet. They knocked a fair amount of weight off from the previous generation...

    Upholstery / interior re-do’s. Cost?

I’ve read elsewhere that it has to meet FAA standards, not necessarily be specifically approved. Also that many, if not almost all, automotive upholstery products do meet fire resistance standards.

    Considering a RV-6A But.......

Do you have stats on tri-gear vs tailwheel RV miscontrol mishaps? I could see that while the RV pilots have more time, many of them are probably moving to a tailwheel after years of flying trikes. Also, anything on recency of experience, and how long they’d had their RV?

    Upholstery / interior re-do’s. Cost?

Is an A&P necessary to do upholstery? It comes under preventive maintenance, and the seats don’t count as primary structure, or do they?

Delta knocks tail off other plane on ground

He certainly seems to hate the B-52. Quite the opposite of a B-52 pilot I met at an airshow a few years ago. I asked if it was fun to fly it and his eyes lit up, he broke out in a big grin and said “oh yeah!” He was one of the highest time B-52 pilots and said he just loved to fly it.
