    Update on Catalina Baron crash

Alw No one was going to die if they slept in the parked plane. It’s not that cold there.

Where would you move for basic aerobatic training?

I wouldn’t move anywhere for training. If you can afford to fly aerobatics, you can afford an airline ticket and a few nights in a hotel. It’ll be a fraction of the money you’ll spend flying over just the next few years, let alone lifetime.

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

Those are all taught to student pilots. The only item that might not actually be experienced is flying the plane at max gross, but the effects and risks are taught.

    What if... Modernizing GA

It doesn’t necessarily take technology. You can self-debrief every flight. Make notes during the flight - when able, and use abbreviations to keep them short - and after securing the plane, sit down with yourself. Review what happened, what wasn’t done right, and then what you will do to...

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

Can we leave a comment quoting My Cousin Vinnie’s closing argument?

    Brokers

You mean they don’t have just two photos - one of of an unwashed plane and the other of a panel criss-crossed with headset and GPS cables, taken through a potato phone inside a closed, unlit hangar?

    What if... Modernizing GA

If I ever want to get back in an RV, I will probably build. Nearly all that are being built these days are loaded with fuel injection, constant speed prop, dual electrical systems, multi-screen glass panels with fully redundant avionics, full-featured autopilot, high-end custom paint scheme...

    2023 Honda Pilot

It’s not a ‘23, but we bought a ‘25 Pilot this summer. We’re currently six weeks into a coast-to-coast road trip and also drove it to Oshkosh - no problems at all. I am completely happy with it. Reliable, comfortable, good acceleration for an SUV, good handling, plenty of room inside...

    Restaurant Feedback

Dixie Crossroads is fantastic! Try the shrimp and grits, but you’d best show up hungry. The Old Farts Flying Club’s flight to Arthur Dunn is one that I always make because they go to Dixie Crossroads.

    Lilium Runs Out of Money

Those devices are as common in ICE vehicles as they are in EVs.

    Restaurant Feedback

Not like they care about reviews, anyway. The rare times that a restaurant manager/owner responds to a Yelp review, it’s almost always a canned response, identically worded to responses to other reviews. They’ll keep doing what they want.

    Van's RV-9A Crash @ Saluda County (6J4) SC

Is it possible that the wind as reported by one-minute averaging 17 miles away could be markedly different from the airport in question at the moment of landing?

I have tasted speed, and I like it

I went from flying an RV-8 at 165-ish knots to an Ercoupe (friend’s) at 85. We’re going to wind up in a 172 or 182. Tradeoffs. Open cockpit in the Ercoupe, more seats and far more load in a Cessna. The -8 is fast and nimble but cramped, especially the back seat.

    ACS Standards Question

The top of the runway width markers, which was maybe 60 yards from the pavement edge. Easy peasy in an Arrow, especially with the approach being wide open.

    ACS Standards Question

On my CFI checkride, the DPE called for a short field landing, for which I aimed for the base of the first piano key and nailed. Then he told me to do it again, but on the threshold (not a displaced one). His reasoning was that you can land a thousand feet down the runway all day long, but...

Looking for info on less lethal/non lethal self defense products

Keep in mind that if you use pepper spray on someone, you’re going to get it on yourself. Best to be exposed beforehand and know what to expect and be able to fight through it than have your first time be when you do it live. Every time I used or was present when pepper spray was deployed, there...

    Size of hangar

Confirm how much you can afford to spend on the hangar and then build the biggest you can within the budget. No pilot anywhere ever said “I wish my hangar was smaller.” You need room for maintenance (plenty of room to move around, workbench, storage, equipment), and maybe some day for a second...

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

I really don’t get why some are so adamant and triggered over how someone else logs time. Is a iation safety harmed if a pilot logs .1 between when the door closes and they start to taxi?

Hey old people, tell us what you can't do!

Very much so. Especially having been in law enforcement, I often spoke like our “clients” and like my coworkers when away from work. I very much enjoy having a cleaner mouth.
