I wonder if that's why I was raised on Miracle Whip. I always just figured mom liked the stuff... that's all we ever had and ditto the margarine and Tang!

National Hurricane Center (Cone of uncertainty)

Yeah, but I think you should have also included North Carolina since almost every storm seems to go there.....

cool. Is the DME in that photo only just the fencepost thing with a small box mounted on the side, or does it include the red and white building behind it?

National Hurricane Center (Cone of uncertainty)

I just went digging to see what they are publishing now. This is what I found...and yeah, I'm not really sure I know what to do with it.... This is the "Seven Day Tropical Weather Outlook" I assume that in 7 days time there is some mysteruious probablility that this disturbance will be within...

Cessna 172 and PA-28-140 - over the dash visibility on the ground

I don't have all that much time in Pipers and no fresh experience to draw on Most of my logged time post PPL was in 172's with the highest fraction in the 172N model. I'm about 1/2 inch shy of 5-10, and as I recall my seat position was seat cranked full up, and 1 stop back from full forward...

    GPS backup

Yes, different systems.... VOR, DME, Tacan....when considering the actual infrastructure from the standpoint of maintaining some and decommissioning others, I'm curious about the actual hardware You have some that look like an oversized horizontal trampoline platform structure, without the...

    Mayo

now that I'm eating an animal-based diet, I wonder if good mayo can be made with animal fat. I'm not so inclined to make my own mayo since I'd use so little of it, but while Avacodo oil seems ok (and I'm thankful that it's commercially available, I'm becoming more and more convinced that...

I pretty much feel that way about all meat now days.... just a bit of salt is all it needs. All the other crap just gets in the way When I eat out now, I've become like my wife in a way. Always used to drive me nuts in a way that she'd always make it so complicated to order anything...

Tips, ideas for judging off-field landing distances?

Maybe a bit of an oversimplification, but I reckon if you're lookin' for a field, that means the engine(s) is/are caput you aren't likely to be passing up any....You'll look around and pick the one that looks to be the longest of the choices you've got there and now.

yeah, I doubt if many would disagree in that preference from a useability perspective....IF it's gotta be a legacy system. but for the purposes of never gonna happen discussions.....the reason I default back to NDB as the better, is only because of simplicity. I think there was real beauty in...

One of the most amazing airshow displays I have seen

Since sadly I was not there.... wondering, for those that were at Sun n Fun this year, how did the night show compare to what they did? Sun n Fun this year was easily the best "fireworks" show I've ever seen...beating I think, even a fireworks show in Jacksonville FL when they had the Super...

A VOR building isn't that big? Well true, compared to an office building or a Wal-Mart.... but it sure is bigger than I'm imagining a small low-powered NDB transmitter might be.... as in maybe the size of a shoebox or certainly no bigger than a small refrigerator. And besides, I wasn't saying...

    GPS backup

ok, so I'm learnin' stuff here.... So I have follow-on questions. So what ya'll are saying is that in many (some/all?) cases they are maintaining those big 'ol conehead buildings out there for use, at least in part, as DME stations. How big or significant is the DME portion of that structure...

    GPS backup

most of the mental gymnastics came when shooting an approach to an airport or do something else with an NDB that was located someplace off the airport. When the NDB is on the field, it was dirt simple. For VFR, the needle points to the airport. For an approach, there's a little mental work to...

    GPS backup

I've posted this exact sentiment several times here over the years. It'll never happen, me thinks, but as a thought experiment it seems like a good idea to me. Seems like about the only system that is dirt simple and is probably very cheap. As I see it...and this is all speculation and...

    Custom Checklist

way back when I was very active and proficient..and was extremely familiar with one or tow particular rental aircraft, I made up some personalized checklists. Probably spent way more time that the average pilot thinking them through, writing and rewriting. They followed a flow but also cut out...

Hawkeye, and old WW2 pilot? Anybody here know him? Tampa Bay X41

My mind has been wandering off to the old Cessna taildraggers again, and so naturally I was thinking about this old instructor and wondering.... so just reviving my old thread in hopes someone here may remember him and know a little more about him.
