Is a 172G still a good buy for my purposes?

For me, I'd plan on immediately replacing the 50+ year, runout engine with a factory new engine. Probably $35-40K for that. I wouldn't even consider doing a major overhaul on an engine that old. I know plenty of people will disagree, but that's my opinion.

    Switch from ground to tower

Ok, hypothetical situation. You're at the main ramp and Ground has cleared you to taxi to the runway. No other instructions. On your way, you optionally decide to pull off into a marked runup area. When you have completed your runup, what do you do?

    Switch from ground to tower

If a runup area is marked with a solid line on the inside and a single dashed line on the outside, it's a non-movement area. In the runup area, bounded by said lines, some airports don't want you to call anyone. They simply expect you to exit the runup area when ready and monitor tower as you...

    Switch from ground to tower

Agree, Larry. But my comment specifically involved calls to ground (or not) when leaving the runup area (which is a non-movement area). Like I said, you are I are talking about different things.

    slips in a 182???

I operate my 182L out of a short grass strip. Been doing slips with flaps 30 for twenty years. Like was said, rarely a slight oscillation sets up, but it is easily quelled.

    Switch from ground to tower

Which raises the question of why does it vary so much from one airport to the another?

    Switch from ground to tower

I >believe< that if you exit the movement area after receiving a taxi clearance, you are technically required to get a clearance from ground to re-enter the movement area. I have no documentation to support this. Just a conversation with a controller many years ago. At PDK, for example, they...

    Switch from ground to tower

The runup area is a non-movement area. At some airports they want you to switch to tower after runup and taxi to the hold short line. At others, they want you to call ground before leaving the runup area. There must be some standard for this (leaving a non-movement area to a movement area) but...

PSI Fee Change Goes Into Effect on January 1

And while we're on the topic of PSI and Knowledge Tests, you might want to take a look at this short article. It explains the vast changes we can expect in the format of FAA tests. One of the big ones is that the Knowledge Test Supplement is expected to go away entirely. No one will know the...

PSI Fee Change Goes Into Effect on January 1

That will be a tough one. PSI has written all the testing software and owns it. No one else would be able to compete based on the costs they'd incur to rewrite everything from scratch. PSI is in the cat bird's seat and I doubt there is anything anyone can do about it.
