Aircraft Spruce - FAILURE in customer service

So here I am, 6 days into needing a 4' piece of 2.5" SCEET tubing to finish up the annual on a working aircraft when I call Spruce to see why I only received half of my ordered products yesterday. The CSR says that they don't have the SCEET tubing in stock and that is why it did not ship...

CFI Question - Do you require FAA Airman Test Passed Before Solo?

Looks like I am the minority for this group - I make my guys take the written first. Having said that, they are getting paid to learn how to fly.

    Constant speed prop question

Too many variables. In my 310Q, I pull the props back to 2450 when I climb through 700' on take off and I don't touch the props again until I shut the aircraft down. MP goes back to 24" for the cruise climb at 130kts. Climbs above my cruise altitude are done with MP if needed depending on...

How important is a paint job?

Had it on Barstormers and FB Marketplace.

Anyone have experience with L3Harris School in Florida?

Ahh yes, the "Bucky" call sign aircraft out of KSFB. Almost as bad as the "connection" call signs from the late 90's- early 2000's out of the same airport. L3 = ATP = any other large corporate structured 141 training organization.

How important is a paint job?

Depends on who you ask. That Cherokee 5 years ago would have brought about $16,000. Corrosion does need to be taken into account but bad paint does not equal bad airplane. To give you an example - I have a Grumman AA5 that is for sale and I'm asking $55K. It needs paint but is nowhere near as...

what's in your flight bag, middle age edition

It's interesting to head all the things you guys carry. I must be a minimalist in aviation. EFB, phone (with Foreflight) and some well placed empty water bottles are all that I have in the plane. Each seat does have a headset though. When I am flying to the Bahamas I bring a backpack that...

    Increased performance with new cylinders?

Here is a question for the group to debate - Say you have a Continental engine that has moderate to low compressions (50-55) when compared to the master orifice. The engine seems to run fine and doesn't burn oil. Would you really see a performance improvement by replacing all the cylinders?

    Looking for CFI advice

Correct but I want my students (and my son in this case) to understand the concepts associated with pitch, power and control, especially in the AA5 we are flying. We will do spins (NOT in the Grumman) for exposure as well. It’s crazy that the commercial rating only wants to see stall...

    Looking for CFI advice

A lot less stressful. Having a set of controls makes all the difference. We flew for an hour this morning and he now has a whopping 2.7 hours in his logbook (.7 was from over a year ago though.) We worked the pattern and he made 7 stop and go landings. 3 of them were unassisted. We also...

    Looking for CFI advice

Admittingly, I have asked a professional pilot whom I was evaluating "are you going to correct this or just let it kill us?" Never felt the need to cuss.

    Looking for CFI advice

Also something to note - and one thing that I did not appreciate until I was in that situation: A CFI/CFII that has been there/ done that it a lot better than a CFI/CFII who is trying to get there. All the theory in the world cannot replace learning from somebody who has actually had to...

    Looking for CFI advice

I just started teaching my 18 year old to fly. The very first lesson, I briefed him that “dad” is a lot different in process than “instructor dad.” IP Dad does not yell or get excited in an aircraft. There is no place for it. Learning to fly can be exciting enough. I told him my first...

Learning Styles- Do they change for Flight Training

When your student is scared crapless because they are encountering something new (from 1500' in the air) then their style will certainly change. Say what now? An hour ground lesson for a 10-12 hour pilot is drinking from a fire hose?

    Looking for CFI advice

Each CFI has their own style. Sometimes it meshes with the learner. Sometimes it does not. Even more so, as you learn more, you may not mesh with that same CFI's style. I try to adapt my style depending on the knowledge level of the student. When I am doing advanced recurrent instruction...

Fist time taking my son up...interesting experience

The airport notams were tacked on at the end. We all make mistakes. If this is the worse thing that happens in his flying career he's doing okay!
