Commercial & Instrument Training in a twin??

Did my Instrument in my own twin. Good thing is you don't have to do two check rides - the ME IR is also good for SE. With DPE check ride fee's of $800 here in LA, plus the rentals etc, you're at least saving $1500 right there.

    Flying to Sedona - NEVER?

Beautiful airport with on of the best airside restaurants I've been to. But perched on the top of a mesa like it is, it is a little deceiving to the eye and it's easy to come in way too high or too low. I screwed up my first approach into there. It also gets really hot so you need to pay good...

    Best fast food burger?

My order: 1. In N Out 2. 5 Guys 3. Habit 4. Fatburger That said, McDonald's has the best fries hands down. In N Out's fries are the worst, unfortunately. But the burgers make up for it.

    Flying without insurance

I've always just had liability only. I owned my planes outright, so never really saw the need for hull. Anything that would break, I could swing in a pinch (even though it would hurt). But I might go for some hull down the road. I certainly need to up my liability a little, as it's on the lower end.

GPS Interference Testing Affecting Biz Jets??????

I bet that all new AHRS systems rely on GPS. I don't think a single modern jet has a INS system of yesteryear. So, I expect this could happen to any modern jet. It's just that it happened to fail the GPS 1 and 2 in this particular Phenom, hence the Notam. With failed GPS'es in other modern...

GPS Interference Testing Affecting Biz Jets??????

They rely on the AHRS and GPS for all autopilot and stability. With that gone, you get autopilot fail, yaw damper fail, ventral rudder fail etc: http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Notice/GENOT_7110_711_EMB-300.pdf

Would really like to hear your weather experiences

If you can, go up next time they report 3 mile visibility and do a few laps around the field to get a "feel" for it. It's pretty eye opening how low the vis can be and still be legal. I don't know how those guys up in Alaska who fly 1 mile all the time do it. They have bigger gonads than I have!

Would really like to hear your weather experiences

By being young and stupid, I learned what my personal VFR minimums were. And I can tell you that the legal 1 mile visibility is a little too rich for me. And the below legal minima's certainly were.. Today, much lower than 3 mile vis and 1000ft ceilings and I'm staying on the ground or filing...

    Go fast on less gas.

Klaus consistently gets 45-60mpg out of this thing. He flew from Santa Paula to Florida on 26gal of fuel in total. It's insane. Or put another way, he could fly from Los Angeles to London direct on 121 gal's of fuel! Article also says he could get 100mpg out of it if he went slower...

Best career to justify owning your own plane?

Don't have to be rich to own a plane. Almost anyone can do it if you can adapt your plane to your earnings. A C152 would not cost much more to own than new car per year. But most people want the new car, or the ATV, or the RV or the…. I own vintage Turbo Commander and am self employed in film...

    IFR rating

It was for me, at least. But I have very bad memory and am not always well organized, and it seems IFR is all procedure, memorizing and organizational skills. It's less about flying. I always had real easy flying on instruments, as that was 'flying', but I was not very good at remembering. It...

    IFR rating

Ain't gonna lie to you, it's a tough rating. Probably the toughest of them all. But it's also very rewarding and very, very useful. But yeah, get a little flying in and most importantly, some enjoyment out of your flying before you launch into it. IFR training is all procedure, all heads down in...

    Instrument test in VFR airplane?

How could accepting an IFR clearance from ATC, which you will do (unless it's all a mock ride) during you check ride, not require a current pitot/static? They're depending on you to keep the correct altitude within the IFR environment, VMC or not.

    Equipment codes confusion.

Well, rented a flight school Gutless Cutlass the other month and went on a long return flight from LA to Stockton and back. 6hrs, all in. Filed as /A as it had an expired database in the 430. Turns out these enroute controllers didn't really care or read the FPL, as they kept giving me directs...

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Failed my first time, too. It happens, nothing to beat yourself up about, although it does feel real crummy afterwards. My DPE was however completely right in doing so, and I hope I'm a better pilot because of it. You'll ace it on the re-test! And what's great - you only need to do the stuff you...

When is it cost effective to hangar your plane

I would love to have a hangar. But at 44ft wingspan for my bird, there are almost none available here in SoCal. The one I can get is $1200/month, which is just too rich for me. That's $14.4K/year. In two years I would have saved enough money for a complete paint job. Plus it doesn't rain here...

    Used Airplanes. Lessons learned?

It'd be a very interesting to know if there was any discernible financial advantage to: 1. Buy a first plane that you sell at a loss 2 years later when you decide to step up to something better/faster. Or 2. Buy a more beaten up but better/faster plane that you then have to upgrade or get up...

Discerning waypoint names when getting Clearances

I have a blockage in my head that I think derives from me not being born a native English speaker, and that is when they spell a waypoint letter by letter to try to help me, my head jams up. I and E gets mixed up easily and many others too and I inevitably get it wrong somewhere. Best for me is...
