anyone have a huge infatuation with turbo props?

Perhaps I was slightly ambitious, but your math is flawed. 456pph is 68gal/hr, not 76. 385pph is 57gal/hr. It seems like the 1000 does 290kts on 57gal/hr at FL350. http://www.eagle-creek.com/2015/05/twin-commander-market-report-falling-for-the-magic-of-great-legacy-aircraft/

anyone have a huge infatuation with turbo props?

I meant single pilot jet. I only know of maybe 1-2 that can do over 2000nm - CJ4 or the SJ30.

anyone have a huge infatuation with turbo props?

TP's do a lot of things well. My old 680V will have to do for now, but if I had more cash I'd go for the Jetprop 1000 model. FL350 doing 300kts burning 54gal/hr in TOTAL. Add to that 2000nm range and the ability to land at short fields (that cost less and often are closer to your destination)...

    Which Twin?

I had an earlier version of the Commander 500, the 520. Great airplanes, very roomy, solid, good bush plane, but a little slower than some similar twins with less roomy cabins. Price you pay for that nice and wide cabin. The 500B probably the best piston they made. Rock solid. And that's why...

Incident in Greenland:Dash8-200 helps Cessna twin to safety

Excellent work by the Air Greenland captain. The brotherhood of aviators is still strong and he probably saved their lives. Notice that the actual Cessna crew are writing in the comments section of the article and also thanking the Dash crew and ground crews.

IFR enroute onto the approach - Still training

If BOYLE was your clearance limit, that's as far as you can go without: 1. Further clarification or clearance. If that can't be obtained, then: 2. Lost comm procedures.

    Too old?

Not at all. But it's a very procedural rating with lots of firehose drinking in the beginning - a lot to take in. I have very bad memory, and no capability to even retain mnemonics, so for me it took a lot of effort until it clicked. Once it clicked, it's easy. I did an intensive 11-day course...

    Heading to Amsterdam

Lelystad Airport is probably the most active and happening GA airfield in the country. Amsterdam is a great city. Make sure you try some good Genever (the original gin) - their national liquor, preferably from a clay bottle.

NA -- What is your favorite war movie?

My favorite war movies tend to be anti-war movies, like: Paths of Glory Das Boot Thin Red Line Enemy at the Gates

    Steppin' up to a whim.

Yeah, I flew through a cloud and put the bleed air heat on and it was after that we noticed it. Since then it has not reappeared, but haven't needed the bleed air. After training is done I will investigate what it is. But yeah, had that graphite/carbon look, which makes me think its exhaust stuff.

    Steppin' up to a whim.

My DME is kaput, so it's just ILS's and non-precision stuff. I hope I don't have to go to minimums anytime soon.

    Steppin' up to a whim.

Thanks Ted! Yeah, /A seems to work just fine most of the time. Sometimes it'd be good to have the possibility to get into smaller airfields with an RNAV approach. Single engin work yesterday. Non-event.

    Steppin' up to a whim.

Well, after a long, grueling two year quagmire of equal measures technical problems as well as molasses-like pace, we have now flown! I am back in LA training in her with an instructor, but it was almost not to be… Here’s the story: Hitched a ride in my friend Steve’s gorgeous Commander 980 up...

    Holding Pattern Intercepts

That's exactly what confuses people/me. In the example "hold NW of fix" on a 120 degree radial (as in an earlier example), I would argue that almost as much of the holding pattern is in SW as it is in NW. So when you draw it out, it doesn't clarify much for those of us who are helped by...

    Holding Pattern Intercepts

I always had, and still have, a mental problem when they say for instance "hold NW of fix". For me, the bulk of the hold is then flown, when plotted visually, to the SW of the actual hold, or at least a big part of it. I have to remind myself that what they're really saying is "your inbound leg...

Aerostar on the road to recovery near Carrollton GA

Aerostars have a great and simple fuel system, but if you don't understand it, it's easy to get it wrong. Pilot does talk about the main tank, which leads me to think he was not in the double cross feed mode. The main tank on the Aerostar has a light/warning that goes on when there's 12gal left...

    End of night VFR coming?

Anyone who's taken off from Santa Barbara at night over the ocean will tell you how friggin black it gets. Zero visual cues and the classic Black Hole scenario. To get back to having references, you need to turn almost 180 degrees to the coast. If you can't do that on instruments, in a climb...

    End of night VFR coming?

Minority opinion, but I think FAA are doing the right thing here. It should be a separate add-on endorsement or rating like in Europe. Night flying without visual references is IFR. Not saying you need to be IFR, but you need to have had enough training to be able to fly entirely on instruments...

    cockpit organization and checklist use

In the air, I can think of no item except gear down or perhaps mixture, if missed, that would pose a direct flight threat. Not one. So what if you forget to retract flaps after takeoff? Done that many times. You'll soon realize it when she won't get up to speed. Props forward on short final? Why...
