CFII lost his medical...Can he do IPC in FTD

As I understand it, no medical needed. However, that means you need to be qualified in plane as he can not act as safety pilot anymore.

    Turbine Engine Choices For HBA?

You have a few choices. For that power range, the RR250 is the normal choice. C18's, C20's - these are the old Allisons that are in every light helicopter ever built. It's a reverse flow engine, like the PT6, relatively cheap to maintain and has low fuel burn. Walter 601's are another choice...

Twin Ownership - Year 1 The ups and downs

I only had my Aerostar for 200hrs, but it was a reliable twin. You had to keep ahead of it maintenance-wise (mouse-milking the wastegates regularly, doing frequent oil changes etc), but it never left me stranded once. They do eat tires unless they're perfectly rigged, but no biggie. Yes, cabin...

Twin Ownership - Year 1 The ups and downs

There can be only one choice - Aerostar. Hard pressed to get more bang for buck than there. Especially in mountainous terrain. The Superstar has single engine ceiling of 14000ft.

Pros and Cons of living full-time in a Motorhome?

For the money you're spending on one of those, and the crash in resale value you'll experience, you can stay in a lot of hotel rooms in a lot of exotic places for a long time.

    Crossing the Atlantic...

I sold my Aero Commander 520 with geared GO-435's to Russia. Turns out a lot geared engined planes get exported to Russia and I asked the buyer why. The Russians have a great regulation that says that any aircraft 50 years or older can be run as an experimental (an idea FAA should adopt). But...

    ATP Requirements vs Cirrus Vision

But he has a point - if you value your time, or your time comes at great expense, then choosing a turboprop (where the initial might be 5 days, recurrent 3) would make you "faster" than any jet for the average owner/operator user per year. There's also a slight tendency to guild the lily in...

    ATP Requirements vs Cirrus Vision

As a rich guy driving a PC-12 said on another forum: "Looked into getting Phenom 300, but the type rating course was 14 days long. That makes it the slowest plane I've owned".

    Crossing the Atlantic...

If you want to cross direct, there are a few twin turboprops that can do it from say Newfoundland to Ireland (about 1600nm). The range king is the Merlin IIIB, it has a range of 2600nm, so does the King Air 350ER. Second is probably a Piper Cheyenne 400LS, they can do about 2400nm. Turbo...

    How Many Hours from a 172 to a 414?

I think you can learn on anything pretty quickly. They used to take (and still do in Europe) 250hr CPL's into the right seat of 737's straight. Or into F-18's. I moved from low time straight into twins myself and didn't find it too overwhelming.

    Los Angeles area recommendations?

Have lunch at the Waypoint Cafe at Camarillo. Great food and good plane watching on the patio. Flight up the coast of Malibu is always nice scenery.

    Piper Aerostar

Every reason! What do you want to know? 1. They need to be worked on by people that know Aerostars. You don't want mechanics with no experience working on them, as you'll be paying them to learn - and it's a steep curve. Good thing is there's quite a lot of experienced Aerostar shops spread...

    AC 690

I won't be turning up in a Sabreliner (as I'm on my second Commander) and yes, you'd be right - it is one of the most economical TP's there are. In a tie with a MU-2.

How many acres required for ultralight runway?

A good way to do this is to revert to simple high school math. Let's say you have a 45000sq.ft property. The root of 45000 is 212, which means (if the plot was square), each side was 212ft long. But if you went diagonally, from corner to corner, you'd get a longer run. Pythagoras theorem says...

Where to fly to, Los Angeles (downtown)

If the weather is good, Compton is the closest. HHR has steep parking fee's, but the LPV approach has pretty low minimas if you're so equipped. Two ways to avoid the ramp fee's there, call either Beach Cities Aviation (flight school) or Security Aviation (maintenance facility) and ask if you can...

    I hate airlines [rant]

Hey, I'm totally with you. Every aircraft I've bought have been with the eye towards eliminating airline travel. I travel a lot for work like you and it's always a PITA. But, one also has to realize that having real dispatch reliability and being able to compete with airlines means having a very...
