That's it I am getting my clearances on the ground

Go through the steps involved, it takes much longer than you indicate because you can't connect more than one device at a time. Do it, then report back how I can improve the sequence. Edit, I am not lazy, but I am forgetful. I have an iPad Mini 5 mounted on the yoke that auto connects to my...

Why would an altimeter be incorrect?

Which altimeter reads higher? One with a leak will read higher. Both altimeters are likely to be connected to the same static source, so there may be an issue in one of the indicators. You should have an avionics shop test the altimeters and static system.

Published Approach to a closed runway

Runway 36 has a true heading shown as 360 in NASR data. The magnetic course for the runway is based on the 1990 variation of 1 W. The VOR radial 330 is based on the 1965 magnetic variation of 2 E. The current magnetic variation in 2020 is about 4 W. The <= 30 degree alignment criteria is met...

Can a CFII instruct with Basicmed instead of an FAA medical?

If the pilot receiving the dual can act as PIC for the flight, the flight instructor doesn't need Basic Med or a medical certificate.

That's it I am getting my clearances on the ground

We had an RCO for many years that used a leased telephone line to relay the VHF communications to CLT TRACON. The leased line was both expensive and failure prone and out of service often. last year a GCO was installed and the RCO was removed from the AFD. The GCO uses a dial up line, so VHF...

    GPS approach downgrade

The color graph is on the right and brown/magenta is good LPV service (like 100% availability or 1.0). As the availability drops, the color changes to orange around 95% availability, to a teal color around 90%, and to blue at 85%. White is off the chart. There are 1440 minutes in a day, so each...

    GPS approach downgrade

Alaska and most of Canada LPV service has been disrupted by solar activity over the past week. The sequence of first seeing amber LPV annunciation indicating that LPV service is not available ending in a downgrade to LNAV when one minute out from the FAF is the way this presents itself on WAAS...

VFR flight plans. Do you file them?

I don't file many VFR flight plans, but almost always file IFR for cross country. I don't use FF in the air most of the time, but will monitor the local TRACON frequency for local flights. When pilots file VFR flight plans, I see many don't ever activate the flight plan and pilots don't...

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

FSS is no longer in the business of providing clearances via the phone. FSS will handle relay of a clearance from ATC if it is received over the radio. A GCO may not work because although it is radio, it places a telephone call to FSS. All this is part of the most recent FAA/Leidos contract and...

    SID question

The current DP order says that MEA should not be based on ATC, but only based on legitimate MEA requirements. IOW, MEA means what it means and can't be redefined by ATC. From 8260.46J 2-1-1(d.)(2): Departure Procedure (DP) Guidelines, d. constraints. The following charting constraints apply...

    Exiting and Re-entering ADIZ Procedure

If you had filed a VFR or DVFR flight plan, you would have been assigned a transponder code by FSS. This is a default transponder code unless ATC issues you a different one.

    Exiting and Re-entering ADIZ Procedure

If you are departing from US and returning to US after entering an ADIZ, you close out your flight plan with FSS. A "completion notice" is synonymous with "closing the flight plan". Any VFR flight plan that enters or crosses an ADIZ is considered as a DVFR flight plan and you have to obtain a...

GTN 750 + GTX 345 = no traffic on map page?

It depends, the KI-525 needs to have bootstrap in order to generate the heading output. If it isn't already part of the KI-525, it is expensive to add.

    Absolutely crazy Bo fuel tanks

The Bonanza was a revolutionary 1940's design and it evolved over the years. With a low wing aircraft, fuel needs to be pumped to the engine as gravity feed doesn't work. The original design was simple, with two 20 gallon main tanks (left or right) and an optional aux tank of 10 or 20 gallons...

    1090 ADS-B

I believe Canada has both Satellite and ground stations. There were ADS-B ground stations in the Hudson Bay area before the satellite system was adopted. Also, I understand that in the high density areas, there are some ground stations. Satellite is available over the entire country, but in the...

Fatal Crash at First Flight, 9/28

I have about 100 hours in a 2008 SR22TN G3. While the stall handling is pretty benign, in my experience, the airplane loses energy very quickly if you go below 80 Kts and low power and can end up descending very rapidly. A common issue was hard landings and banging the nose wheel fairing. With...

    Helene relief flights

I was able to make 4 flights out of KJQF Concord. They were well organized, pallets were made up with specific weights, so we took 300 pound pallets each flight, which worked for my Bonanza. I could not max out the weight because of CG limitations. At the destination, we were marshalled into a...

Garmin VNAV on an LNAV approach

I turn off the GS with my Stec 60-2 and just use nav mode without GS for the lateral guidance. I set the MDA in my altitude preselect at circling MDA+60 feet and Minimums to MDA, VS bug to -700 FPM. At the FAF, I press Alt/VS simultaneously to initiate the descent and lower the gear. I verify...
