    Useful Rules of Thumb

I love the science and math aspect of aviation and am a big fan of rules of thumb (that involve some easy math). I thought I'd share some of my favorite ones in video form. Hope you find this useful. Would love to discuss any other useful ones and learn more!

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

I started my Youtube channel to share aviation with others and get back to creating my own films on my own terms after 20+ years shooting for others, which is still my career. The whole point is to nerd out with other pilot nerds about this stuff. There are lots of things I find interesting...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Just want to clarify something about a previous video where the front passenger door cracked open over Sedona. If you watch that one, I am reviewing the checklist and call out the door for my wife. Wife says check/yes and I still look at the door and catch that it is not latched and then she...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

I think some people may do this. I try to do the opposite. If I know that the flight will be particularly challenging- marginal weather, a lot of first time passengers or nervous flyers I make a point to NOT roll the cameras. It is just one more thing that could be potentially distracting...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Larry, I get what you're saying and am thinking deeply to consider it. For real. I am not likely to agree with it, but I am cracking my mind wide open to let it in. I believe your intentions are to be helpful, although that is a stretch for the #2 in your first post. But I am a big fan of...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Yeah I get it...which is why on POA in the thread's first sentence I specify exactly what happened and in the description of the youtube video I specify what happened as well. So you know what it actually is before clicking through. But I get it- I struggle with titles that will attract an...

Had to check my browser address- I thought for a minute I had logged in to reddit. LOL.

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Haha- I actually did not intend on making a Youtube video out of this flight. I normally have 3 more angles than what I used in this video. You can see the empty camera frame and mount next to my head...I just decided to roll the ones I happened to have in my backpack with the limited battery...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

Haha- that one never crossed my mind....

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

I suppose a coordinated right turn would keep things glued down but I didn't want to take the chance.

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

I totally agree that it would have been better to let them know sooner so they could anticipate. Definitely a big takeaway for me. Continuing on with the airplane in a stable configuration with no heading , power, altitude, or otherwise changes to an airport I have landed at hundreds of times...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

I'm sorry you feel the title and description are click bait. I went on a flight- there was a loud bang, the baggage door popped open, it was not a good situation. Not sure how the title, description, or post is misleading in any way. I could have used "Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

The closest airport was Burbank and the runway configuration would have me making some right turns...or asking BUR tower for all left turns potentially causing more traffic conflicts with large commercial jets. My home airport is literally 2 minutes flying farther than Burbank and I would not...

    Hollywood Sightseeing Flight Goes Wrong...

The forward baggage door popped open on a recent sightseeing flight over Hollywood. Hope this video is a useful reminder of the power of a good preflight! Eric

Making Decisions Despite External Pressures - Rescuing 6 Puppies for Pilots N Paws

That's great to know. I was wondering about that when I saw the NOTAM since I thought it was unusual...and now it makes sense. I probably should have ALSO monitored the CTAF on Comm 2. Great to learn thank you for this.

Making Decisions Despite External Pressures - Rescuing 6 Puppies for Pilots N Paws

They always want to adopt the dog we fly- usually it is only one dog. I have had to say no a couple times but they usually do ask. haha. When you start doing missions make sure you ask if they are going to provide a crate or if you need to bring one. And now I just keep a couple leashes up...

Making Decisions Despite External Pressures - Rescuing 6 Puppies for Pilots N Paws

We recently used our Cherokee 6 on a Pilots N Paws rescue mission. Not everything went according to plan and this flight reminded me about how we as pilots sometimes must make tough decisions despite a lot of external pressures. Hope you enjoy:
