My first 6 hours continuous flight - need advice

Don't drink coffee beforehand... And PLEASE post photos! What may seem normal or boring to you may just be fascinating to us on the other side of the world!

    Instrument training…

Had something similar happen on my very first IMC flight after getting my ticket. The high work load and lack of redundancy (and lack of autopilot) made me realize this was more risk than I was willing to take on. Single pilot IFR can kill you and your family over a small problem. I made the...

    My experience with EarthX Batteries

I finished building my Zenith CH601 XLB eight years ago. I chose EarthX for my plane due to weight. I have a heavy engine (Lyc. O-235-C1) and wanted to do everything possible to reduce weight. Since my first flight in 2016 I have gone thru four or five EarthX ETX 680 batteries in 600 hours of...

    Resurrect old A/C?

Pressure test the system (piping, Evap coil, condenser coil) verify compressor bearings and cylinder are functional, verify blower fan, new air filter, refill refrigerant and bob's your uncle. None of this is complex for a refrigerant guy. No idea if finding someone to work on a plane is a...

Mechanic in Annual Inspection Replaced ELT that hadn't expired and charged me for it

The battery for my Ack E04 is $280 from Aircraft Spruce, plus an hour for removal, replacement and reinstall. Sounds about right. Also, if it's an E04 there are two other batteries, besides the primary ones, that may need replacing.

    For Sale Scam alert

Strange but I got an email from this guy trying to sell me an IFly GPS. I figured anyone with that name was not someone I'm going to do business with.

Elbow on cylinder oil drain tube leaking

Engine is a Lycoming o235-c1. I have a situation where if I tighten the 90° elbow at the cylinder the oil drain tube itself will not connect to the elbow. If I back the elbow off slightly to get the flared tube to thread in the elbow, I'm getting leaking out of the threads of the elbow. I've...

    shade tree engine mount repair

The really bizarre thing is that it is not that hard to do this. I had to do a similar repair on my Lyc O-235. Four hours start to finish and the engine and motor mount are off. Then its just a matter of finding a competent welder and an hour of his time. Instead, risk killing everyone on...

    AirCam down KMEV Minden-Tahoe

Did my experimental transition training here. Hated the never ending turbulence. May not have been a factor in this case but it's the first thing I thought of. Being right on the lee of those mountains, and in the desert-like environment is not a fun place to fly. Except perhaps if you are a...

[NA] Determining an appropriate deposit amount

A contractor should not be paid in advance for labor, imo. If he is so desperate for a paycheck he needs money up front to cover personal expenses then they're probably not good at their job. Frankly, I would only pay 50% of materials until I saw them on site. In the end, a contractor/owner...

    Air-to-Air Sikorsky S-76

Sick! The photo angles seem particularly unique with those huge blades seemingly coming right at you. Pretty stunning.

Fatal Crash at First Flight, 9/28

I know nothing about Cirrus aircraft and not an expert on interpreting FlightAware data. It appears the track log (if I'm reading it correctly) appears to show them doing between 140 mph and 150 mph on the last downwind leg. (And maybe as fast as 160 mph on this first downwind?). Or am I reading...

Have you ever spent six hours with your underwear on backwards?

When I was in my early 20's I realized wearing underwear served no useful purpose whosoever, at least for males. A million years later I still feel the same way. Sometimes I wonder how much money on underwear I've saved - and how many loads of washing. %^)

Do you subscribe to Windy.com Premium subscription? Do you find it beneficial for trip planning?

Trying to decide of Windy premium is worth me spending $19. I understand its subjective but even after reading the added benefits I'm still not sure how they may apply to flight planning, if at all. If you use it and get some benefit from the premium subscription I would like to know what the...

What advice would you give someone for a CFI checkride?

Maybe take some pressure off yourself by not trying to hit a home run, and instead, be ok with getting to home plate on stolen bases and walks. A win is a win.

As an older pilot I don't want to agree with you, but I do.

An evening with a B17 in Atwater CA

It's a huge runway and airport. But, in fairness, you can park right in front of the terminal building now.

An evening with a B17 in Atwater CA

Yeah, there is one of these displays at Castle - however, there is a real stealth fighter in the restoration hangar now!

An evening with a B17 in Atwater CA

Here's a partial list of aircraft on display. I know of a few aircraft that are there that are not on the list. And yes, they really do have a thermonuclear bomb... or at least the exterior casing. Avro-Canada CF-100 Mk.V Canuck Avro Vulcan B.2 Beech C-45G Expeditor Beech YT-34 Mentor...

An evening with a B17 in Atwater CA

No. But the museum does a good job of keeping the up, both inside and out. They have a dedicated restoration department. They're getting a stealth fighter ready for display now but it won't be viewable for some time. The air force donated it with the fuse coating removed. Not sure what the...
